Rutgers head coach announces retirment
Tom Hayes announced his retirement as head men's lacrosse coach at Rutgers, effective at the end of the 2000 season. Hayes has piloted the program since 1975, and has led squads to NCAA tournament appearances in 1975, 1984, 1986, 1990 and 1991.
A 1990 inductee into the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Hayes has produced 54 all-Americans during his tenure at Rutgers. He also collected U. S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Man of the Year honors in 1974 and 1987.
Before joining the Rutgers staff, Hayes led the Drexel program for six years. In 31 years as a head coach, Hayes has amassed a 236-172 record. The 236 wins places Hayes third among active Division I men's lacrosse coaches.
Hayes, the current International Lacrosse Federation president, also served on the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Committee from 1990 to 1996 and worked as president of the U.S. Lacrosse Coaches Association from 1993 to 1996. Additionally, he served as general manager for the U.S. Lacrosse team for more than 12 years and completed a stint as chairman of the USILA rules committee and international games committee.
Hayes earned all-America recognition as a midfielder at Penn State.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Virginia Tech appointed Charles W. Steger as president to succeed Paul E. Torgersen, who will retire December 31. Steger has served as dean of the school's College of Architecture and Urban Studies and most recently has been vice-president for development and university relations.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
David Bedard was appointed as athletics director at Centenary (Louisiana) to succeed Russ Sharp, who became assistant athletics director for administration and finance at West Virginia. Bedard has been a professor of health and exercise science at the school ... Eastern Connecticut State appointed David G. Yeo as interim director of athletics.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Bowling Green appointed Scott Seeliger as associate athletics director for development. Seeliger has been director of corporate and foundation development at the school.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Missouri-Kansas City hired Cynthia Gabel as assistant athletics director for internal operations. Gabel was an enforcement representative with the NCAA from 1990 to 1999 ... Central Florida selected Chris King as assistant athletics director for compliance and Tim Leonard as assistant athletics director for external affairs. King has been director of compliance at Liberty, and Leonard spent five years as director of annual giving for the athletics department at Illinois State ... Doug Dowdy was named assistant athletics director-facilities operations at Illinois State ... Wichita State chose Rege Klitzke as assistant athletics director for business operations. For the past 12 years, Klitzke has served as associate athletics director at Fort Hays State.
COACHES
Baseball -- Akron elevated Tim Berenyi to acting coach, effective July 1, 2000. Berenyi, who has been an assistant coach for the past seven years, will share coaching responsibilities with 27-year veteran head coach Dave Fross, who will continue as co-head coach ... Tom Uraski was selected as head coach at Dominican. Uraski has been an assistant coach at the high-school level for 15 years ... Carroll named Stephen Dannhoff as head coach.
Baseball assistants -- Dominican added John Baker and Terry Casey as assistants ... Scott Fletcher and Chuck Lusted were chosen as assistants at Emory ... Fairleigh Dickinson selected Shawn Dowds as assistant baseball coach and fields and events coordinator.
Men's basketball -- Carroll added Sean McDonough as head coach.
Men's basketball assistants -- Loyola (Illinois) named Jim Harrick Jr. as an assistant coach ... Jason Butikofer was chosen as an assistant at Luther ... Tony Jones was chosen as associate head coach at Toledo ... Emory selected Brian Baum as an assistant coach ... Howard Evans was added as an assistant coach at Gwynedd-Mercy.
Women's basketball -- Montana State released head coach Tracey Sheehan after four seasons.
Women's basketball assistants -- Jeff Malby was released as an assistant at Montana State ... Seton Hall named Nan Hambrose as an assistant coach ... Football -- Central Michigan head coach Dick Flynn resigned, effective November 22 ... Valdosta State announced the promotion of assistant coach Mark Nelson to head coach. Nelson succeeds Mike Kelly, who was relieved of his duties ... Memphis head coach Rip Scherer was awarded a two-year contract extension through January 2004 ... Jim Marshall, head coach at Tennessee-Martin, will not return next season ... Wayne State (Nebraska) announced the resignation of head coach Kevin Haslam, effective at the end of the season.
Men's and women's ice hockey -- Steve Goddard resigned as head men's coach at Curry. The school named Rob Davies as Goddard's successor.
Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Curry men's assistant Leo Shanahan resigned.
Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Eastern Connecticut State awarded assistant women's coaching duties to Melissa Sachs and assistant men's coaching duties to Dan Warren.
Men's soccer -- Dave Schureck was appointed as head coach at Dayton to succeed Jim Launder, who accepted duties as state director of coaching for the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association. Schureck has been the top assistant coach with the program for three years.
Women's soccer -- Westfield State head women's coach Donna Coombs resigned after four years and a 44-27-4 coaching record.
Women's soccer assistant -- Emory awarded assistant women's soccer and assistant tennis coaching duties to Amy Smith.
Softball assistants -- Tara Christie added as an assistant coach at Emory ... Manhattanville chose Lisa Sherman as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Cindy Fontana and Alexandre Kossenkov were appointed as assistants at Emory ... Jill Belding was appointed as an assistant coach at Eastern Connecticut State.
Men's and women's track and field -- Eastern Connecticut State selected Kathy Manizza as men's and women's head coach to succeed Derek Yush, who resigned ... Temple added George Phillips as track and field coach ... Don Glover was appointed head men's and women's coach to replace Tom Kerr. Glover has been coaching at the high-school level.
Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Emory chose Melissa Wiltzius as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Ellen Dempsey resigned as head coach at Ohio, effective December 31, 1999.
Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Emory hired Catherine Lindsey as women's assistant coach.
Men's and women's water polo -- UC Irvine added Julie Swail, captain of the U.S. National Women's Water Polo Team, as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition during the 2000-01 academic year. Swail, who will continue competing with the national team through September 2000, has been head coach at Rio Hondo College.
Wrestling assistants -- Scott Baum was named as an assistant at Rhode Island College ... The Citadel named Josh Miller as volunteer assistant coach.
STAFF
Assistant athletic trainer -- Maria Gaccione was added as assistant athletic trainer at Eastern Connecticut State.
Compliance -- Wayne Bridgeman was selected as compliance/academic director at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to replace Patrick Hairston. For the past two and a half years, Bridgeman has been coordinator of compliance and student-athlete affairs at Sonoma State ... Saint Louis added Mark Dean as director of compliance. For the past year, Dean has been in private law practice with the firm of Lashly and Baer, P.C.
Event management -- Eastern Connecticut State chose Andy Wisk as assistant for event management.
Facilities -- Becky Benson was chosen as supervisor of athletics facilities and equipment at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Marketing/promotions -- Butler named Erin Lukac as sports marketing and events manager. Lukac has been corporate events coordinator for the Indianapolis Indians, a minor league baseball team, since January.
Media relations assistant -- Bob Lange was selected as assistant director of media relations at Temple.
Sports information -- Jim Fennell was selected as sports information director at Franklin Pierce.
Sports information assistants -- Chris Smith was selected as sports information assistant at Emory ... Central Florida appointed Kevin Woods as assistant sports information director ... Manhattanville named John Venditto as sports information assistant. Venditto has been athletics director for the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester for the past three years.
Ticket operations -- Mike Jackson was chosen as director of ticket operations at Saint Louis, succeeding Bill Thomas, who accepted an assistant director of ticket operations post with the National Football League's St. Louis Rams. For the past three seasons, Jackson has been athletics ticket manager at Western Kentucky.
CONFERENCES
The Eastern College Athletic Conference hired Beth Burr as director of public relations. Burr has been associate director of media relations at North Dakota.
The Sun Belt Conference selected Kevin Warner as assistant commissioner for marketing and promotions.
CORRECTION
Two headlines for page one charts within the gender-equity report story in the October 25 issue of The NCAA News were inadvertently reversed. The chart for assistant coaches' salaries for women's sports actually applied to head coaches' salaries for women's sports, and vice versa.
NOTABLES
K.J. Hippensteel, a sophomore at Stanford, and Zuzana Lesenarova, a senior at San Diego, were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association national players of the month for October. San Diego's Lesenarova and Katerina Valkyova and Stanford's Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim were selected as ITA national doubles teams of the month for women and men, respectively.
Willie Banks, Larry Ellis and Charles Moore were elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Banks competed collegiately at UCLA, twice earning runner-up finishes at the NCAA national championships. He went on to represent the United States in 18 international competitions and in the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympics. Ellis, head coach at Princeton for 22 seasons, served as head coach for the men's U.S. Olympic team in 1984 and the 1998 World Cup team. He died November 4, 1998. Former Cornell athletics director Charles Moore captured the 1951 NCAA 220-yard hurdles crown.
DEATHS
Forrest "Forddy" Anderson, former head men's basketball coach at Bradley, died recently at the age of 80. Anderson led the Bradley program from 1948-54, guiding teams to two NCAA Men's Final Fours in 1948 and 1950. His teams also made two appearances in the National Invitation Tournament in 1949 and 1950.
