DeNardis, Schallenkamp appointed to Presidents Council

Lawrence J. DeNardis, president of the University of New Haven, and Kay Schallenkamp, president of Emporia State University, have been elected to the Division II Presidents Council.

DeNardis will replace Allen Lee Sessoms, president of Queens College (New York), while Schallenkamp will take the place of Marvalene Hughes, president of California State University, Stanislaus. Sessoms' and Hughes' terms will expire in January.

In addition to electing the two new members, the Presidents Council also reelected Hazo W. Carter, president of West Virginia State University, to a four-year term.

DeNardis

DeNardis was named president of New Haven in 1991. He previously represented Connecticut's Third District in the U.S. House of Representatives (1981-82) after serving five terms in the Connecticut State Senate. He also was assistant secretary for legislation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 1985-86.

DeNardis was appointed by President Bush to serve as a member of the board of regents of the National Library of Medicine from 1990-94.

Immediately before his appointment at New Haven, DeNardis served as president and chief executive officer of the Connecticut Policy and Economic Council. He served as chair of the Connecticut Board of Governors of Higher Education in 1991.

His academic experience includes 16 years as associate professor and chairman of political science at Albertus Magnus College, Visiting Professor of Government at Connecticut College, Guest Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars of the Smithsonian Institution, and seminar instruction at Yale University.

DeNardis earned a bachelor's of science of degree in economics from the College of the Holy Cross. He has master's and doctoral degrees in government from New York University.

Schallenkamp

Schallenkamp became the 14th president of Emporia State in 1997, making her the first woman to head a Kansas Regents institution.

She came to Emporia State after serving as provost and vice-chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.

Schallenkamp began her career in higher education in 1973 as a professor of communications disorders at Northern State University. She served as department chair from 1982-84 and was named dean of graduate studies in 1984.

In 1988, she was named provost of Chadron State College.

She has served as commissioner of the North Central Association (NCA) and chairs the NCA Task Force on Organizational Effectiveness and Future Directions. She has served on more than 20 NCAA accreditation teams and was team chair for visits to Japan and England.

Schallenkamp earned her doctorate in communication disorders from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She received her master's degree from the University of South Dakota and her bachelor's degree from Northern State University.
