Certification subcommittee gives approval to three events

Three postseason football all-star games received certification from the Division I Football Certification Subcommittee during the group's October 4-5 meeting in Indianapolis.

The three games, the Rivals.com Hula Bowl, the Kelly Tires Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic and the East-West Shrine Classic, all were recommended for certification by the subcommittee. The Championships/
Competition Cabinet's administrative committee approved the recommendation October 21.

One other application for certification was not recommended for certification by the subcommittee.

The three certified contests use member institutions' athletics facilities and thus must be certified in order to be played. The games are subject to an annual certification process in which they must meet the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 30.2.2, which include the distribution of a percentage of income to a charitable organization.

The East-West Shrine Classic has been held annually since 1925. This year's game will be held January 15 in Palo Alto, California. The Blue-Gray All-Star Classic has been played annually since 1939, except for a one-year hiatus in 1943. This year's game will be held December 25 in Montgomery, Alabama. The Hula Bowl, which was begun in 1960, will be played January 22 in Honolulu.

In other actions, the subcommittee continued its ongoing review of certification application forms and made minor modifications. The subcommittee also heard a presentation from David Parry, supervisor of football officials, regarding officiating issues related to postseason bowl games.
