Moore named senior woman administrator

Delta State named Scottie Moore as senior woman administrator and assistant women's basketball coach. Moore succeeds Burnadette McDonald, who accepted head coaching responsibilities at Mississippi Delta Community College.

Moore spent the 1998-99 season as a graduate assistant with the Delta State women's basketball program. Prior to her stint as a graduate assistant coach, Moore competed on the squad for four seasons. During her career, Moore helped capture the Gulf South Conference title three times and made two Elite Eight appearances between 1994 and 1998.

A 1998 graduate of Delta State with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education, Moore earned a master of science degree from the school this past spring.

Craig Kahoun named head men's coach at Butler to replace Jon Hind, who was promoted to assistant athletics director for internal operations. Kahoun has been an assistant with the program for the past year ... Saint Mary's (California) hired Diane Whipple as head women's coach. The program was upgraded to Division I status, effective in the 1999-00 academic year. Whipple has been coaching at The Menlo School.

Men's and women's track and field -- Eureka appointed Rick Crawley as head men's and women's track coach. Crawley most recently has worked as a data processing specialist at the school.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Colleen Frohlich named interim head women's coach at Montana to replace Dick Scott, who has been placed on a leave of absence for the rest of the 1999 season. Frohlich has been an assistant with the program since 1996 ... Jennifer Euring added as head coach at St. Joseph's (New York) ... UC San Diego selected Ron Larsen as men's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- St. Joseph's (New York) named Nicole Gick as an assistant coach.

Wrestling -- The Citadel hired Rob Hjerling as head coach to succeed Tom Herring. Hjerling spent the 1998-99 season as an assistant at George Mason.

Wrestling assistant -- Tolly Thompson chosen as volunteer assistant coach at Northern Iowa ... Willie Stravino selected as an assistant at the Citadel. Stravino has been an assistant at George Mason.

STAFF

Academic services -- David Rhoades added as director of athletics academic services at Pepperdine.

Administration -- Sean Simmons added as an administrative assistant for athletics at Seton Hall. For the past two years, Simmons has been an assistant track coach at James Madison.

Advancement -- Pepperdine appointed Barbara Kuhl as assistant director of athletics advancement.

Athletic trainers -- New York City Tech chose Eric Pflum as trainer ... Robert J. Lawton named as head athletic trainer at Maine. Lawton, who replaces Charlie Thompson, has been been an athletic trainer at Navy ... Wheelock added Heidi McCahan and Marco Thornton as athletic trainers.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Ohio State added Angie Beisner as an assistant trainer, appointed Jen Fice and Bob Burns as graduate assistants and chose Matt Schatzke as an intern.

Business manager -- Yolanda Velasquez promoted to athletics business manager at Pepperdine.

Development -- Nebraska promoted Paul Meyers to director of athletics development to replace Jack Pierce. Since 1994, Meyers has been a development officer, and he has served as senior development officer and interim director since June.

Facilities -- Tim Elson, women's swimming and diving coach at Pepperdine, accepted additional duties as director of athletics facilities.

Marketing/promotions -- Mark Walpole replaced Chris Denari as director of sports marketing and promotion at Butler. Walpole has been assistant director of media relations for Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds.

Media relations assistants -- Stanford named Kyle McRae as assistant media relations director.

Recreation -- Stefan Charles-Pierre selected as director of recreation and intramurals at New York City Tech.

Sports information -- Matt Aug selected as sports information director at St. Joseph's (New York) ... Everett Hutto selected as women's sports information director at Samford ... San Diego's Ryan McCrary resigned as assistant sports information director, effective October 17.

Sports information assistants -- Al Barba elevated to associate sports information director at Pepperdine ... North Carolina-Wilmington named Tom Riordan as assistant sports information director ... Angela Russo selected as sports information associate at Ohio State. Russo has been an assistant sports information director at Toledo for the past year.

Ticket operations -- Joe Simon added as database/ticket manager of the Seahawk Club at North Carolina-Wilmington.

CONFERENCES

Conference USA selected Richard Fetchiet as coordinator of baseball umpires. Fetchiet currently serves as supervisor of baseball umpires for the Big Ten and Mid-American Conferences as well as the Collegiate Baseball Umpire Alliance. Additionally, since 1991 he has been director of development and external relations for the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

The Sun Belt Conference promoted Tom Burnett to associate commissioner.


NOTABLES

Luke Donald, a junior at Northwestern, and Miriam Nagl, a freshman at Arizona State, were selected as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for September. Donald won individual medalist honors at the Ping/Golfweek Preview and Nagl won the Oregon State -- SunRiver Fall Preview.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named Virginia Commonwealth's Daniel Andersson and San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova as national players of the month for September. The organization also selected Iva Pulferova and Martina Ondrejkova of South Alabama and Steve Huss and Tiago Ruffoni of Auburn as women's and men's national doubles teams of the month, respectively.

Sid Watson, former head ice hockey coach and athletics director at Bowdoin, was selected for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Watson, who also is a former chair of the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee, captured Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in 1971, 1975, 1976 and 1978. He retired as athletics director at the school in 1998.


DEATHS

Robert George Woll, former professor, coach and student-athlete at Monmouth, died of an apparent heart attack August 29. He was 88. Woll lettered in football, baseball and basketball at Monmonth and went on to coach multiple sports at the school. His jersey number, 29, is the only number ever retired by the school.

William Fenton, former Iowa football player, died of prostate cancer on September 29. Fenton, 66, lettered from 1951 to 1953 and was a first-team Big Ten Conference selection in 1952 and an academic all-America in 1953.

Former Illinois basketball player Matthew Heldman was killed in an automobile collision. He was 23. Heldman, a point guard with the 1997-98 Big Ten Conference championship team, graduated in 1998 and had been playing professionally in Greece and Finland for the past year.

Johnny McLendon, former basketball coach at North Carolina Central (then North Carolina College), passed away at the age of 84. Through tenures at Hampton, Tennessee State (then Tennessee A&I), Kentucky State and Cleveland State, McLendon amassed a 25-year career record of 523-165. He is credited with the development of the zone press, full-court press and up-tempo basketball.

Former Jackson State football player and coach James "Big Daddy" Carson died recently after an illness. Carson played offensive guard and nose tackle at Jackson State from 1959 to 1963 and went on to coach the football team from 1992 to 1998, compiling a 54-25-1 record. During his tenure, Carson led squads to back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships in 1995 and 1996.

Former Kentucky football offensive lineman Jeremy Streck died after being struck by a car on October 1. Streck, 23, competed in 32 games at Kentucky and was a Southeastern Conference academic honor roll selection before graduating with a degree in communications.
