Facilities: The Kresge Foundation has awarded the University of Rochester a $1 million challenge grant toward the renovation and expansion of its athletics complex on the River Campus. Conditions of the grant require the university to raise an additional $4 million by the completion of the project in October 2000. More than $10.6 million already has been raised in the $14.5 million campaign to completely reconstruct the interior of the gym and make other improvements. Robert B. Goergen, chairman of the University Board of Trustees and an alumnus of Rochester has pledged $5 million toward the renovation of the facility, which will have a new entrance, a fitness center and multipurpose rooms. Other changes include enlargement of the basketball court, renovation of the spectator area of the pool, relocation of the coaches' offices and the installation of air conditioning ... Williams College will name its Olympic-sized pool the Carl R. Samuelson and Robert B. Muir Swimming Pool in honor of the two men who served as the head coaches of Williams swimming for 62 consecutive years. Muir coached there from 1936 to 1966, and Samuelson coached there from 1966 to until last year. Samuelson is on leave this year and will retire next summer. In May, there will be a public ceremony celebrating the naming of the pool.

Conferences: Louis W. Spiotti, athletics director at Rochester Institute of Technology and president of the Empire Athletic Association, recently announced that the conference had expanded its sports offerings and changed its name to the Empire Eight. The conference, which only sponsored men's and women's basketball for the past five years, has been in existence since 1991. This year, the conference will include 15 sports. The conference plans to appoint a full-time commissioner to handle conference championships, publicity and other duties.

Milestones: Joel Dearing, Springfield College, 400 career victories in women's volleyball ... Dottie Potter Zenaty, Springfield College, 300 career victories in field hockey. Zenaty, the winningest active field hockey coach in New England, is in her 30th year as head coach at her alma mater ... George Martin, Colby-Sawyer College, 100 victories in women's volleyball. A two-sport coach, Martin had a good day a few weeks ago when he reached the 100-victory milestone in volleyball and then notched his 200th career victory in volleyball and basketball combined ... Bob Sullivan, Carleton College, 100 victories in football ... University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, football coach Bob Berezowitz won his 100th game with a 45-6 victory over the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. Berezowitz is 100-45-4 in 15 years with the Warhawks.
