Lane named athletics director at St. Bonaventure
St. Bonaventure has appointed Gothard A. Lane as vice-president and director of athletics. Lane succeeds David L. Diles, who accepted a similar position at Eastern Michigan.
For the past three years, Lane has served as assistant director of campus recreation services at Maryland. In this post, Lane's responsibilities included soliciting major gifts, budgetary analyses of selected events and programs, and coordinating special projects to create alternative sources of revenue for recreational facilities. Before his tenure with campus recreation services, Lane worked as assistant director for varsity sports at the school for 15 years.
Lane, a 1971 graduate of Randolph Macon with a bachelor of arts degree in English literature, is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the American Football Coaches Association.

The Patriot League announced Christian Evans Gartley as assistant executive director for communications. Gartley has been with Professional Sports Publications for the past four years.
The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced the appointment of Kyle Kravchuk as assistant commissioner for business affairs. Kravchuk has been in charge of the athletics ticket operations at Connecticut.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America is hosting the sixth annual Women's Soccer Symposium in San Jose, California, Saturday, December 4. The symposium will be in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's College Cup. NOTABLES
Tom Osborne, former head football coach at Nebraska, was named recipient of the 2000 American Football Coaches Association's Amos Alonzo Stagg Award. The honor is presented to the "individual, group or institution whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football." Osborne coached 25 seasons at Nebraska, amassing a record of 255-49-3 and capturing national championship titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997.
DEATHS
Former Truman State head football coach John E. Ball passed away September 22 at the age of 59. Ball, who was starting his seventh year as athletics director at Fort Zumwalt South (Missouri) High School, lead the Truman State football squad to a 37-38 mark from 1983 to 1989.
Paul Gregory, former basketball and baseball coach at Mississippi State, passed away at the age of 91. Gregory, who lead the basketball program from 1948 to 1955, took over the baseball program in 1957 and led it to multiple Southeastern Conference championships during his 18-year tenure.
Edwin W. Thompson, former football, basketball and baseball player at Delaware, died at the age of 86. Thompson set multiple records during his collegiate career and served as captain of the football, basketball and baseball squads.
