Southwestern names Smith as head coach
Five-time Olympian Francie Larrieu Smith was selected as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Southwestern (Texas).
Smith, a National Track and Field Hall of Fame member, has set 36 U.S. records and has established 12 world records in distances ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 meters during her career. She also was the flag bearer for the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.
Tabbed by Runners World magazine as the Most Versatile Runner of the Quarter Century, Smith has served as national honorary chair of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure.

Eureka hired Mike Mason as head coach. Mason, who has been head coach at Spoon River College in Canton, Illinois, also will serve as an assistant football coach and men's sports information director ... George Horton, head coach at Cal State Fullerton for the past three years, was awarded a four-year contract extension through the 2003 season ... Steve Hauser resigned as head coach and associate athletics director at Macalester to become the athletics director at Madison (Wisconsin) Area Technical College. Media relations -- Temple's Kevin Lorincz resigned as assistant sports media relations director.
Sports information -- Worcester Polytechnic added Steve Raczynski as sports information director. Raczynski most recently worked as director of media relations for the American Basketball League's New England Blizzard ... Mason Logan promoted to sports information director at Emporia State. Logan has been an assistant sports information director since 1995 ... Allentown named Tim Brooks as sports information director. Brooks has most recently been a sports information affiliate at Delaware ... Chapman selected Doug Aiken as sports information director to succeed Jim Moore. Strength and conditioning assistant --David Grant appointed as assistant coordinator of strength and conditioning at Seton Hall.
CONFERENCES
Bob McEvoy, athletics director at Methodist, has been chosen as president of the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. McEvoy will fulfill a two-year term as president.
The Mid-American Conference appointed Bob Gennarelli as associate commissioner for external operations and Dell Robinson as associate commissioner for legislative and compliance services. Gennarelli has been assistant executive director of the Sylvania Alamo Bowl and San Antonio Bowl Association, and Robinson has been assistant commissioner for compliance with the Western Athletic Conference. The Mid-American Conference also selected Stephanie McDonald as assistant commissioner for sports programs and women's basketball operations. McDonald has been director of compliance at North Carolina State.
The American Southwest Conference announced the following Executive Committee officers for the 1999-00 academic year: Howell Todd, Mississippi College, president; Rick Niece, Ozarks (Arkansas), vice-president; and Milam Joseph, Dallas, past president.
The following were selected as members of the Lone Star Conference's Council of Presidents for the 1999-00 academic year: Russell Long, West Texas A&M, chair; Don Davis, Cameron, vice-chair; James Hindman, Angelo State, second vice-chair; Joe Anna Hibler, Southwestern Oklahoma State, third vice-chair. The conference named Robert Ziegler, faculty athletics representative at Cameron, as president.
AGREEMENTS
The Ohio Valley Conference announced a five-year contract extension with the Gaylord Entertainment Center for its basketball tournaments through 2006.

CORRECTIONS
A caption in the Dates & Sites insert in the September 13 edition of The NCAA News contained incorrect information. The University of Arizona, not the University of Kentucky, won the 1997 Men's Final Four in Indianapolis. Also, in the listing for the next availability for championships, the correct availability for the Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships is November 17, 2001.
The school from which Howie Burke graduated was incorrectly stated in The Record section of the September 13 issue of The NCAA News. Burke, sports information assistant at Manhanttanville, is a 1999 graduate of Manhattan.
NOTABLES
Christine Grant and Pedro Rossello selected as 1999 Rolex Achievement award winners. The honor is presented to former collegiate tennis players who achieve excellence in their careers. Grant currently is commissioner of health and senior services for the state of New Jersey, and Rossello has served as governor of Puerto Rico since 1993.
Julie Max, head athletic trainer at Cal State Fullerton, was elected president of the National Athletic Trainers Association. The first female to hold the position, Max has been a member of the board of directors for six years and served one year as vice president. Max joined the Cal State Fullerton athletics department in 1979 and has fulfilled head trainer duties since May 1992.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Steve Hagwell, assistant publishing manager, resigned to become assistant commissioner for public relations at the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Hagwell has been with the Association since 1991.
DEATHS
Former Northwestern football player Matt Hartl died after a lengthy battle with Hodgkin's disease. Hartl, 23, was one of the leaders of the 1995 Northwestern team that played in the Rose Bowl.
Alva E. Kelly Jr., former football coach, passed away August 21 at the age of 81. Kelly lead football programs at Brown, Colgate and Hobart from 1951 to 1971.
Walter Slovenski, 79, former track and cross country coach at Bates, passed away after a long struggle with cancer. A football player and baseball all-American who also competed in track and field, Slovenski coached at Bates for 43 years, working as assistant football coach and head track coach.
Former NCAA Council member Ernest C. Casale died September 6 at the age of 80. Casale, an assistant professor at Temple, served on the Council for seven years in addition to fulfilling terms on the Division I Men's Basketball Committee, the Eligibility Committee and the Executive Committee.
Steve Little, a former Arkansas football player, passed away at the age of 43. He kicked a 67-yard field goal in 1977 to beat Texas and tie the NCAA record for longest field goal kicked. Little went on to play professionally with the National Football League's St. Louis Cardinals. Little was paralyzed from the neck down after an automobile accident in 1980.
Akron track and field student-athlete Richard "Rick" Lappert was killed when his car crashed into a utility pole. Lappert, 18, was a freshman.
Alvin Lee, a former basketball player at Alabama, died in a car accident September 5. He was 33. Lee led the nation in scoring while playing at Western Texas Junior College before transferring to Alabama.
Brian Reed, a basketball player at Ferrum, died of a brain aneurysm September 14. He was 19. Reed, who also played football last season, was a computer science and information systems dual major.
