DIVISION IChampionships panel seeks change in policy on Sunday play The NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet has rescinded waivers granted to the Division I Women's Soccer and Women's Basketball Committees regarding the Sunday championships competition rule and also has agreed to support legislation that would eliminate the waiver opportunity. NCAA rules state that if a university competing in an NCAA championship has a written policy against competition on a particular day for religious reasons, the championship schedule must be adjusted to accommodate that institution. However, Bylaw 31.1.4.1.1 permits a waiver of the rule if the governing sports committee for a championship determines the accommodation would unduly disrupt the conduct of the championship. DIVISION ICabinet to forward six amateurism proposals The Division I Academics/Eligibility/Com-pliance Cabinet has agreed to forward a list of six proposals that would amend the Association's amateurism rules for pre-enrolled student-athletes. The proposals will be considered by the Division I Management Council at its October meeting. If given preliminary approval, they will be circulated to the membership for comment. Based on the revised legislative calendar for Division I, the proposals could be considered by the Management Council and the Board of Directors again in April. The proposed changes were recommended by the cabinet's subcommittee on agents and amateurism and were developed after a two-year study of amateurism legislation affecting prospects. The subcommittee noted that it is beginning a review of amateurism legislation for enrolled student-athletes. Staff contacts: Kevin C. Lennon.
