Information for prospective student-athletes

The 1999-00 version of the NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete is available from NCAA publishing.

The book, designed and edited for ease of use, contains an abundance of information for high-school students who are interested in participating in intercollegiate athletics.

The book contains information on academic eligibility standards, national signing dates and financial aid, among other things. This year, for the first time, it also includes registration material for the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearninghouse.

In his introduction to the book, NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey counsels prospective student-athletes to make education their top priority, noting the long odds against a professional athletics career. Only about 200 out of 1.5 million high-school football and basketball players make an National Basketball Association or National Football League team every year, and the odds on a successful athletics career are longer still.

Individuals interested in a copy of the Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete may call the publishing staff at the national office.

    LITIGATION

Judge dismisses case involving NCAA restriction on logos

A federal district court in Kansas recently dismissed a lawsuit that challenged NCAA limits on the size and number of logos on uniforms.

The judge disagreed with a claim by Adidas America that use of logos on players' uniforms was the only way the company could promote its products in a way that linked them to the high performance needs of athletes.

In an order filed August 26, the court said Adidas failed to prove that it had been hurt by not being permitted to use its logo in violation of the NCAA's size rule when it could use sponsorship agreements or advertising with other organizations.

    HONORS PROGRAM

State winners selected for Woman of the Year recognition

The NCAA has announced Woman of the Year award winners representing each state and the District of Columbia.

The award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership.

The state-level winners include 28 student-athletes from Division I, 12 student-athletes from Division II and 11 student-athletes from Division III.

Each NCAA member institution was encouraged to submit a nominee. A selection committee then reviewed the nominees' grade-point averages, athletics accomplishments and community service and involvement.

The national winner will be announced at the 1999 NCAA Woman of the Year dinner presented by Rawlings October 24 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.
