Bradley-Doppes named as athletics director

North Carolina-Wilmington has hired Margaret Bradley-Doppes as director of athletics, effective October 1.

Bradley-Doppes comes from Michigan, where she most recently served as senior woman administrator and senior associate athletics director. She also worked as a volleyball coach in 1990 and as associate athletics director and women's athletics director at Michigan from 1991-94.

Prior to her tenure at Michigan, Bradley-Doppes coached volleyball at North Carolina for seven seasons and at Miami (Ohio) for five seasons.

An active NCAA committee member, Bradley-Doppes currently serves on the Committee on Women's Athletics and the Peer Review Team Certification Committee.

Bradley-Doppes, the first full-time female athletics director in the Colonial Athletic Association, earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from the College of Mount Joseph in 1979 and a master's degree from Miami (Ohio) in 1981.

CONFERENCES

The Atlantic 10 Conference appointed Suzanne DeFruscio as assistant director of communications and Dennis Brown as assistant director of sponsorships.

Conference USA named John McNamara as associate commissioner. Since 1995, McNamara as been an associate commissioner at the Western Athletic Conference.

Cindy Harris resigned as associate commissioner for internal affairs at the Mid-Continent Conference to become assistant athletics director/compliance at Illinois State. Harris has been with the conference since 1995, serving as assistant commissioner until her promotion to associate commissioner in 1997.

The North Coast Athletic Conference elected R. Stanton Hales, president at Wooster, as president for a two-year term. Hales, who was conference vice-president, succeeds Thomas B. Courtice of Ohio Wesleyan. The conference also selected Robert A. Oden, president at Kenyon, as vice-president.

Steve Shutt appointed as director of public affairs at the Southern Conference. Shutt has been a public relations executive with Jeff Dezen Public Relations in Greenville, South Carolina.

DEATHS

Former Temple head men's basketball coach Harry Litwack died of a stroke August 7. He was 91. Litwack, who guided the program for 21 years, coached his team to the 1969 NIT championship and NCAA Final Four appearances in 1956 and 1958.

Otterbein head baseball coach Dick Fishbaugh died August 15. He was an active NCAA regional and national committee member.

J. Lynn Trimble, a two-sport coach at Thiel, died August 10 due to complications from back surgery. Trimble had been head women's volleyball and head softball coach at the school since 1989.
