CoSIDA tabs author, SIDs
Sports information directors honored their own at the annual College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) workshop, July 4-7 in Orlando.
Renowned sportswriter and author Dan Jenkins was awarded the Jake Wade Award, which is given annually to the individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the media to the field of college athletics.
Jenkins is a graduate of Texas Christian University. In 1962 he joined the staff of Sports Illustrated, and for the next 23 years his byline appeared on more than 500 feature stories and articles for SI. For the past 14 years, Jenkins has written for Golf Digest.
Jenkins is a four-time nominee for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary and fiction, and he is the author of 16 books, seven of which have been best-selling novels, including "Semi-Tough," "Dead Solid Perfect" and "Rude Behavior."
Rick Brewer, sports information director at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, received the Arch Ward Award, which is presented annually to a CoSIDA member who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of sports information and has brought dignity and prestige to the profession.
Brewer is in his 31st year at North Carolina and in his 24th as the SID there. He was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1991, served as the organization's president in 1995-96 and still is a member of the board of directors. Brewer was a press officer at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and he has been a member of the Media Coordination Committee at the NCAA Men's Final Four since 1983.
Several other awards also were presented. Pete Moore, assistant sports information director at Syracuse University and formerly of Ithaca College, was honored with the Warren Berg Award, given annually to a college division CoSIDA member.
GTE was honored with the Keith Jackson Award, presented to an individual or organization that has made a lasting contribution to intercollegiate athletics, has demonstrated a long and constant commitment to excellence and has been a loyal supporter of CoSIDA.
Jack Grinold, sports information director at Northeastern University, was honored with the Good Person Award, which is given annually to a CoSIDA member for civic involvement and accomplishments outside the field of sports information.
Those recently inducted into CoSIDA's Hall of Fame were: Emil Parker, Davidson University; Tim Peterman, University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire; and Roy Pickerill, Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Sewanee marks 1899 feat
At the University of the South (Sewanee), they're celebrating the 100th anniversary of the school's most famous football feat.
In 1899, the Sewanee football team went undefeated at 12-0, outscoring their opponents 332-10.
That alone would have been memorable, but what made the season incredible was the streak of five football games in six days -- all Sewanee shutouts against formidable opponents -- that provided the midway point of the season.
The tiny Episcopal school atop Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau defeated the University of Texas at Austin, 12-0; Texas A&M University, College Station, 10-0; Tulane University, 23-0; Louisiana State University, 34-0; and the University of Mississippi, 12-0. It was David beating Goliath five times over. The Tigers already were an unbeaten 4-0 going into the 2,500-mile, 77-hour road trip. That entire season, only Auburn University, which would later lose to Sewanee, put points on the board.
Sewanee, which has been a Division III institution since 1972, will celebrate this special season all next year, but the school has set aside the game October 9 against DePauw University to honor the 1899 team.
A record-shattering sound
Kelly Schade, a senior softball pitcher at Simpson College, recently wrapped up an NCAA record-shattering career.
Schade, a 1998 GTE first-team academic all-American, set or tied seven Division III records this year.
Her 113 career victories broke the old mark of 91 set by Janice Lemchak of Kean College, and she owns the career shutout record in Division III with 77.
Schade also broke the career strikeout record with 1,121. Schade also holds the record for most strikeouts in a season (341), which she set last year. Schade also holds records for most shutouts in a season (25) and most strikeouts in a season (371), and she is tied with Calvin College's Shauna Koolhaus for career games (139).
Winner of the 1998-99 Honda Awards Program Division III student-athlete of the year, Schade led Simpson to the 1999 NCAA Division III national title.
Now Schade is headed into the pro ranks with the Virginia Roadsters of the Women's Professional Softball League, where Schade hopes to continue her shattering ways.
