The popularity of women's collegiate volleyball was evident again this past season as more than three million fans attended matches at four-year institutions across the country. It was the third consecutive year that women's volleyball attracted a total attendance of more than four million fans (including junior colleges).

Division I attendance (1,742,896) surpassed 1.5 million fans for the sixth consecutive year while Division II pulled in crowds totaling 417, 921 and Division III brought in 310,387. NAIA institutions surpassed 800,000.

The University of Hawaii, Manoa, repeated as women's attendance champion for the fifth consecutive season. Hawaii also has claimed the men's title for five consecutive years.

The Rainbow Wahine women's team played before a total of 144,476 fans in 18 home matches, an average of 6,880. The University of Nebraska, Lincoln, finished second with 3,866 fans per match.

The University of Wisconsin, Madison, set NCAA single-match attendance records when it played host to the 1998 Division I Women's Volleyball Championship at the Kohl Center. A crowd of 12,327 was on hand for the semifinals, and 13,194 showed up two days later for the championship match. That record was eclipsed February 19, 1999, when Brigham Young University drew a crowd of 14,156 for a men's match between the Cougars and Hawaii.

In Division II, the University of Nebraska at Kearney reigned as average attendance champion for the fifth consecutive year, attracting an average of 872 fans. Central College (Iowa) led Division III in average attendance at 617 for its 12 home matches.
