Femovich chosen to lead Patriot League

The Patriot League has named Carolyn Schlie Femovich as executive director. Femovich replaces Constance H. Hurlbut, who resigned in January to become director of basketball operations for the Women's National Basketball Association.

Since 1986, Femovich has been senior associate athletics director at Pennsylvania. Prior to that she was associate athletics director at the school for four years.

Femovich began her career in athletics at Indiana, where she was a graduate teaching assistant during the 1974-75 academic year. She moved to Gettysburg in 1975 to become coordinator of women's athletics, head women's basketball and head women's tennis coach and assistant professor of health and physical education. Femovich joined the athletics department at Pennsylvania in 1982.

Currently, Femovich serves on the NCAA Division I Business/Finance Cabinet and is chair of the NCAA Basketball Marketing Subcommittee.

Femovich earned a degree from Valparaiso and a master of science degree from Indiana.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Georgia State athletics director Orby Moss Jr. has announced his resignation, effective June 25. Moss will become the assistant vice-president for student affairs and director of athletics at Norfolk State. Moss served as Georgia State's director of athletics for nine years. The school appointed Blaine Hughes, senior woman administrator and senior associate athletics director, as interim athletics director ... Amy Campbell hired at Bryn Mawr to replace Jenepher P. Shillingford, who will retire July 1. Shillingford, who also served as the school's field hockey coach, has been at Bryn Mawr for 23 years. Campbell most recently has served as an associate director of athletics at Princeton ... Mary Ellen Alger resigned as athletics director at New England College, effective June 30. Alger served in the position for nine years and will assume full-time faculty duties as assistant professor of kinesiology and sport management at the school ... Central Washington's Gary Frederick resigned as athletics director but will continue as head softball coach. Frederick has been athletics director at the school since September 1980 ... Findlay appointed Steven P. Rackley as athletics director, effective July 1. Rackley, who succeeds James Houdeshell, has been associate athletics director for operations at Marshall since 1996 ... Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne named Walter L. Bowman as athletics director to succeed Stanley "Butch" Perchan ... Jim Schaus hired as athletics director at Wichita State, effective July 1. Schaus has been senior associate athletics director at UTEP since 1998 ... Wisconsin-Whitewater hired alumnus Shawn Eichorst as athletics director to succeed Dianne Jones and Willie Myers, who served as women's athletics director and men's athletics director, respectively. Eichorst has been an associate attorney with the firm of Michael Best and Friedrich LLP of Milwaukee, a position he has held since September 1998 ... Bill Miller, head baseball coach at Texas Lutheran, appointed as acting director of athletics at the school to replace Kathryn Yandell, who is retiring as athletics director but will continue to teach at the school until May 2000, when she will retire from the university. Miller has been head coach for seven seasons and will retain his coaching duties.

Danielle Tiernan appointed as senior woman administrator/assistant director of athletics at Grand Valley State. Tiernan succeeds Joan Boand, who retired after 33 years. Boand is credited with establishing almost all of the women's sports at the school, including serving as head volleyball coach, softball coach and basketball coach ... Messiah head softball coach Amy Weaver named as senior woman administrator/assistant director of athletics for operations.

Peter Simon promoted to associate athletics director for external relations at San Francisco. Since coming to the school in 1982, Simon has served as sports information director, director of media relations and marketing, and as assistant athletics director for media relations and marketing ... Mary Ann Sunbury promoted to associate athletics director at Pfeiffer ... McNeese elevated Louis Bonnette to senior associate athletics director for sports information and public relations. Dan Talbot named as head cross country and track and field coach at Bryn Mawr ... Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne announced Robert Waterson as head men's and women's cross country coach. Waterson has been an assistant with the program for the past year.

Football -- Findlay announced the retirement of Dick Strahm. Strahm, who has battled cancer and heart problems the last three seasons, compiled a career record of 183-64-5 in 25 seasons at Findlay ... Glenville State appointed Rick Trickett as head coach ... W. Douglas Coate selected as head coach at Findlay to replace Richard Strahm. Coate has been an assistant coach with the program for 14 years, working most recently as offensive coordinator ... St. Cloud State named Randy Hedberg as head coach. Hedberg, who succeeds Noel Martin, has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/receivers coach at North Dakota for three seasons.

Football assistants -- Elon chose Lonnie Galloway as wide receivers coach, Morris Starr as running backs coach and Richard Lage as defensive line and strength and conditioning coach ... Southern Mississippi named Mitch Rodrigue as running backs coach and Vic Eumont as specialteams coach and recruiting coordinator. Men's lacrosse -- Wheeling Jesuit hired Bear Davis as head coach. Davis has been a graduate assistant at Marietta ... John Stapleford resigned after two years as head coach at Eastern ... Messiah named Jerry Standford as full-time head coach and assistant equipment manager.

Men's and women's skiing -- Saint Michael's named Rogan Connell director of skiing and men's and women's downhill coach.

Men's soccer -- John Skelton appointed as men's soccer coach and Alpine skiing coach at New England College.

Men's soccer assistants -- Craig Shatkus named men's and women's goalkeepers coach at Cornell. Shatkus has coached soccer at the high-school level for the past two seasons ... Roberts posted a career record of 408-399 as head coach of both the men's and women's tennis programs ... Stacy Rowley, head men's tennis coach at Muhlenberg for the past four seasons, resigned ... Hilary Nichols selected as women's head coach at Canisius to replace Cristen Kessler ... Eastern head men's and women's coach Corey Shapiro resigned ... Catawba appointed Jack Thompson as head women's coach ... Mike Benson, head men's and women's coach at Pacific Lutheran, announced retirement plans after 30 years. Benson has captured or shared 24 Northwest Conference championships during his tenure ... Grand Valley State named Reed Sutton as head men's and women's coach. Men's and women's track and field -- Grand Valley State hired Jerry Baltes as men's and women's head track and field coach and men's and women's cross country head coach. Baltes has been an assistant at Butler ... Ralph Honderd, head men's track and field coach at Calvin for 21 years before stepping down in 1997, selected to replace Gregg Afman as head women's track and field coach at the school next year.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Alexander Ha selected as head volleyball coach at Hartford. Ha joins the staff after serving as head coach at Teikyo Post ... Vickie Nichols accepted head coaching duties at Samford to replace Malinda Ashcraft ... UC San Diego head men's coach Jon Stevenson resigned to become assistant women's coach at Wyoming ... Angela Rock named as head women's coach at Alaska Fairbanks ... Jo Coronel chosen as an assistant at George Washington. Coronel, an assistant men's volleyball coach at Pacific (California) for five seasons, replaces Yvette Moorehead, who was promoted to head coach of the program in April.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Sara Plinska appointed as graduate assistant coach at Central Michigan ... Morehead State added Mary Powell as a graduate assistant. For the past four years, Powell has been head coach at Fredonia State.

Women's water polo -- Jamey Wright chosen at UC Davis. Wright will be the first full-time coach of the program, which was elevated from club to varsity status three years ago.

STAFF

Academic advisor -- Georgetown basketball academic advisor Mary Fenlon announced plans to retire, effective July 31. Fenlon has been with the program for 27 years.

Athletic trainers -- John Kaltenborn chosen as head athletic trainer at Fredonia State ... New England College athletic trainer Scott Ward resigned to accept a position in athletic training at Keene State. Assistant athletic trainer Janna Wentzell was promoted as Ward's replacement ... Ralph Reiff resigned as director of sports medicine at Butler. Reiff has been head athletic trainer and an assistant professor in the College of Education at the school since 1981 ... Colby-Sawyer's Matt Gerken resigned as head athletic trainer after nine years to accept the same position at Southern Maine.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Seton Hall assistant athletic trainer Nicole Hagner resigned after three years.

Intramurals and recreation -- John Carroll named Sandra Dobran as intramural and recreation director.

Outdoor education -- Todd Miner was appointed as director of outdoor education at Cornell. Miner, who replaces Dan Tillemans, was an assistant dean at Keuka College.

Sports information -- John Gilger hired as sports information director at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Gilger has been assistant sports information director at East Tennessee State for two years ... Wheeling Jesuit named Jack Regis as sports information director/public affairs writer ... Seton Hall named Brett Swick as assistant sports information director... Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne selected Michael Jewell as sports information director.

Sports information assistants -- Steven Torres, assistant sports information director at Merchant Marine, resigned to become public relations assistant at the United States Soccer Federation ... Ryan Thompson chosen as assistant sports information director at Grand Valley State.

Strength and conditioning -- Kim Sword named as head strength and conditioning coach at San Jose State. Sword has been serving in a similar capacity at Utah State for two and a half years.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Scott Brincks chosen at Kentucky ... Eastern Kentucky named Mike Kent as strength and conditioning coach.

Ticketing services -- Dan Karpanty retired from Grand Valley State after serving 25 years in various capacities within the athletics department including as assistant to the athletics director/ticket coordinator.

CONFERENCES

The Atlantic Coast Conference named Amy Moore as assistant director of media relations.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference chose the following individuals as officers for the 1999-00 academic year: Harold E. Ridley, president, president at Loyola (Maryland); James A. Liguori, vice-president, president at Iona; Richard J. Ensor, secretary/treasurer, commissioner of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference; Robert J. Byrnes, chair of committee on athletic administration, athletics director at Manhattan; Chandra Bierwirth, vice-chair of committee on athletic administration, assistant athletics director at Marist.

The New England Football Conference announced the resignation of Mickey Curtis as publicity director. The conference selected Roger Crosley as Curtis' successor.

The West Coast Conference executive committee re-appointed Lane Bove, president at Loyola Marymount, as president and Andrew Benton, president at Pepperdine, as vice-president to two-year terms. The conference also appointed Carmen Jordan-Cox as treasurer to succeed James Briggs. Jordan-Cox serves as vice-president for student affairs at San Francisco.

Scott E. Higgins elected as president of the Southern Conference for 1999-01. Higgins, faculty athletics representative at Western Carolina, was vice-president last year. Wofford's Ted R. Monroe elected as vice-president for the conference for 1999-01. The conference also announced that Charles H. Lyle, associate commissioner for marketing, licensing, promotions, radio and television, retired.

Jon A. Steinbrecher awarded a multiyear contract extension as commissioner of the Mid-Continent Conference. Steinbrecher has been commissioner since November 1994.

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association elected the following officers for two-year terms: President, Kay Schallenkamp, Emporia State; vice president, Dean Hubbard, Northwest Missouri State; secretary, C. Pat Taylor, Southwest Baptist. The organization also selected the following individuals as institutional representatives for two-year terms: president, Sallie Beard, Missouri Southern State; vice-president, John Rich, Emporia State; treasurer, Paul Engelmann, Central Missouri State.

The Big East selected Jerome Rodgers as assistant commissioner for compliance. Rodgers has been director of compliance and student services for athletics at Eastern Illinois.

The Mid-Continent Conference reelected Donald Spencer to a one-year term as chairperson of the conference's Presidents Council. Spencer is president at Western Illinois. The conference also announced that Helen Smiley, director of athletics at Western Illinois, and William Johnson, faculty athletics representative at Western Illinois were awarded new one-year terms as chairpersons of the conference's Directors Council and Faculty Athletics Representatives Council, respectively.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games announced that Fraser Bullock, executive vice-president and chief operating officer, accepted additional duties as chief financial officer. The organization also promoted Gordon Crabtree to managing director of finance and hired Michael J. Bertelsen as director of the Washington, D.C. office.

NATIONAL OFFICE

The NCAA hired Jody Yelovich as human resources coordinator. Yelovich has been a human resources generalist at Quality Dining Inc.

Kellie Leeman selected as assistant director of special events. Leeman has been marketing and promotions coordinator and head women's soccer coach at Lawrence.

Mary Eiland, assistant athletics director for marketing at James Madison, chosen as assistant director of promotions.

CORRECTIONS

The school where William Meehan was selected as president was incorrectly stated in The Record section of the May 24 issue of The NCAA News. Meehan has been named president at Jacksonville State.

The school where Kim Robinson was named as senior woman administrator and where Charles Lang was appointed assistant athletics director for finance and operations was incorrectly stated in The Record section of the May 24 issue of The NCAA News. Robinson and Lang are with Merchant Marine.

A Methodist College golfer was misidentified in a photo that accompanied the Division III Men's Golf Championships story in the June 7 issue of The NCAA News. The golfer pictured is Pete Stefanchik.

Some institutions were not included in a listing of accredited athletic training curriculums that appeared in the May 24 issue of The NCAA News. In addition, other certified curriculums have been announced since the article appeared.

NOTABLES

Massachusetts pitcher Danielle Henderson named as winner of the Honda Award as the top woman collegiate athlete in softball. Henderson posted a 26-game winning streak and a 30-4 overall record to help Massachusetts to a 43-10 season and a berth in the Division I tournament. She set an NCAA record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched and led the nation in strikeouts per game ... Texas track athlete Suziann Reid was named the Honda Award winner in track and field. Reid is only the second woman to win the 400-meter run twice at the NCAA indoor championships ... Joe Crowley, president at Nevada and former president of the NCAA, has been chosen as recipient of the third Merit of Honor Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The award recognizes an individual "whose superior integrity is displayed in tireless commitment to the highest ideals of athletics in general and intercollegiate athletics in particular." Crowley received his award at NACDA's 34th annual convention, June 13-16. Crowley has been a member at Nevada since January 1966 and has served as president of the institution for the last 20 years.

NACDA also announced four NCAA winners for the inaugural NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletics Director of the Year Award. The award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to colleges/universities and their surrounding communities. Award winners for 1998-99 include: Division I-A - Jim Livengood, Arizona; Division I-AA/I-AAA - Gary Cunningham, UC Santa Barbara; Division II - Rudy Carvajal, Cal State Bakersfield; and Division III - Judy Sweet, UC San Diego ... The following individuals have been selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association national award winners for Division I men's tennis: Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year, Craig Tiley, Illinois; Ted A. Farnsworth/ITA National Senior Player of the Year, Hisham Hemeda, Georgia; ITA National Rookie of the Year, Peter Handoyo, Tennessee; ITA National Player to Watch, Jeff Morrison, Florida; ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year, Brett Greenwood, UCLA; ITA/Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award, Robert Samuelsson, Tulane; and John Van Nostrand Memorial Award, Kelly Gullett, Pepperdine.

Melinda Almazan and Kelly Schade named Honda Award winners as Division II and Division III Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, respectively. Almazan, a senior volleyball setter at Regis (Colorado), was named NCAA Division II player of the year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and was selected as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year for the second straight time. Schade, a senior softball player at Simpson, captured first-team all-America and first-team academic all-America honors in addition to setting Division III single-season records for wins (37), strikeouts (371) and shutouts (25) ... The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named the following as finalists for the 1999 Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball's player of the year: Marshall McDougall, Florida State; Jason Jennings, Baylor; Mario Ramos, Rice; Andy Phillips, Alabama; Spencer Oborn, Cal State Fullerton.

Jason Jennings, pitcher and designated hitter for the Baylor baseball team, named the 1999 Dick Howser Trophy winner. Jennings, 1999 Collegiate Baseball magazine's and Baseball America's College Player of the Year, is a first-team GTE CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1999 and a two-time first-team all-American.

Luke Donald and Grace Park named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for May. Donald, a sophomore at Northwestern, captured individual medalist honors at the 1999 Division I Men's Golf Championships. Park, a sophomore at Arizona State, won individual medalist honors at this year's Division I Women's Golf Championships.


DEATHS

Sylvan Leroy "Sig" Lawson, former football assistant and head swimming and diving coach at Austin, died May 29. Lawson, who coached for 23 years and also served as the school's athletic trainer, was 64.

Former South Alabama head baseball coach Eddie Stanky died of heart failure June 6 at the age of 83. Stanky coached at South Alabama for 14 seasons, compiling a 488-193 mark and earning three Sun Belt Conference Championships. He also was a former Major League Baseball player and manager.

Charlie Skinner, former head baseball coach at Alma, died May 27. Skinner headed the Alma baseball program for 13 seasons, winning five consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association crowns from 1953-57.

The founding coach of Sacred Heart's men's ice hockey program, Peter Downey, died of brain cancer at the age of 56. Downey also served as head women's coach at Yale and assistant men's coach at Yale and Trinity.

Stephen Eugene Cannon, former sports information director at Fort Lewis, died in a rafting accident on June 6. He was 38. Cannon was sports information director with Fort Lewis for three years, beginning in 1989.
