MONARCHY: Methodist takes ninth golf crown of 1990s

Methodist continued its dominance of the Division III Men's Golf Championships, winning the school's fifth straight title May 17-20 at Williams. The Monarchs fired a tournament-low 288 in the third round to seal the victory and claim their ninth title of the decade.

The Monarchs started the tournament with a 297, two strokes better than Otterbein. After another 297 in the second round, Methodist distanced itself from the field with its third-round 288. The Monarchs closed with a final-round 308 to shoot 1,190 for the tournament.

UC San Diego, which won the team championship in 1993, was the tournament's runner-up, shooting a score of 1,217. Greensboro was third with a score of 1,222. Otterbein and Wisconsin-Eau Claire tied for fourth at 1,224.

Chad Collins of Methodist took medalist honors for the second straight season, posting the tournament's only final score that was not over par. Collins finished with an even-par total of 284, highlighted by a second-round 66. Methodist golfers have won the past five individual championships.

Devin Redmond of Williams fired a 294, 10 shots behind Collins, to take runner-up honors. Damon Aswad of Methodist posted a 296, good for third place. Ian Miller of Ohio Wesleyan shot a 301 to finish fourth, and Nathan Smith of Allegheny and Steve Erickson of Gustavus Adolphus posted scores of 302 to tie for fifth.
