Pitcher's triple crown fuels Simpson's second softball title

Simpson's Kelly Schade finished her career with a shutout win, a Division III pitching record and a national title when the senior led the Storm to its second Division III Women's Softball Championship in three years May 24 at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Schade threw a three-hit shutout to down Chapman, 6-0, in the title game. It was the 25th time Schade had pitched a scoreless game this season, which is a NCAA record.

The win avenged an earlier tournament game that Chapman won, 5-2, and avoided elimination. The second game pitted the two teams for the third time in the five-day tournament and for the second straight championship bout.

Simpson's Kelly Hall helped the Storm take an early lead by singling for her first RBI of the tournament in the opening inning. After stranding five runners in the first three innings, the Storm broke the game open in the fifth, scoring two runs off of a Chapman error. Schade kept the Panthers scoreless, retiring the final 12 batters she faced.

Simpson finished the season 47-4-1 and posted a 4-1 record in the championship series.

Chapman finished as the tournament runner-up for the second consecutive year and finished the season 35-10.

Schade, Abbie Archibald and Amber Ridnour were named to the all-tournament team for Simpson. Chapman placed Amie Barnes, Molly Beckett, Linsey Buendia, Stephanie Carew and Chrissy Lake on the all-tournament team. Alma's Sarah Lefke and Kathryn Nordin were honored along with Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Jill Schoenike, Lisa Schueler and Karrie Meinen, Messiah's Lindsay Nelson and Rowan's Stephanie Allocco.
