Scranton names Lambinus as head coach

Scranton has hired Eric Lambinus as head men's soccer coach. For the past year, he has been an assistant coach and administrative intern at Washington (Maryland).

Lambinus competed collegiately in soccer and tennis at Moravian. In soccer, Lambinus served as team captain in addition to being a four-time conference all-star and a two-time regional all-star. Lambinus also earned conference all-star recognition as a tennis player and was an all-district academic selection as well.

Currently, Lambinus works as a certified public accountant and competes as team captain and a starting defender for the Reading Rage, a professional soccer team affiliated with the USISL.

Lambinus earned a master's degree in physical education at East Stroudsburg.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Colgate hired Katrina Silva as head women's coach to replace Cathy Foto, who stepped down to focus on her duties as head field hockey coach. Silva has been head lacrosse coach at Roanoke for three seasons.

Ticket services -- Western Michigan promoted Don Beyer to ticket manager to replace Greg Menzel. Since 1995, Beyer has served as assistant ticket manager.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-American Conference named Rick Chryst commissioner. Chryst was an assistant commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee hired Doug Arnot as managing director of event operations for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The organization also appointed Laura Lamando director of licensing.

AGREEMENTS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has secured the support of Host Communications, Inc. in providing funding for the recently formed John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards. Host will contribute $25,000 to the program over the next five years. The awards were announced by NACDA earlier this year, and will be presented to minority senior students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. Each of the 10 annual recipients will receive a $5,000 grant. The program will be administered by the NACDA Foundation. NACDA initiated the program with funding of $250,000 from proceeds from the Kickoff and Pigskin Classics.

The Mobile Alabama Bowl announced a multiyear agreement with Conference USA and a one-year agreement with the Western Athletic Conference to provide their second team selections. The bowl is scheduled to debut at 6:30 p.m. Central time, December 22 on ESPN2.

Jack Lengyel, director of athletics at Navy, has been chosen by the National Invitation Tournament to be the recipient of the 18th NACDA/NIT Athletics Directors Award. Lengyel has been the athletics director at Navy for 11 years.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named Michal Chmela, a junior at LSU, and Vanessa Castellano, a senior at Georgia, as national players of the month for April. The association also named Texas A&M's Dumitru Caradima and Shuon Madden and Stanford's Teryn Ashley and Marissa Irvin as men's and women's national doubles teams of the month.

Chuck Neinas was selected as recipient of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football award, presented annually to the person whose efforts has positively impacted amateur football. Neinas formerly served as executive director of the College Football Association and currently serves as executive director of Neinas Sports Services in Boulder, Colorado.

John Toner, Connecticut athletics director and former NCAA president, has been named recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 46th Annual UConn Club Awards Dinner. Toner joined Connecticut athletics in 1966 as head football coach. When he became athletics director in 1969, he retained his head coaching duties for two more years. Toner also has served as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Paul Casey and Shauna Estes named Rolex College Golfers of the Month for April. Casey, a sophomore at Arizona State, captured the Pacific-10 Conference championship and Estes, a junior at Georgia, won the Southeastern Conference championship.

The College Golf Foundation, in cooperation with MasterCard International, announced the following six winners of the second annual MasterCard Graduate Scholarship Awards: Division I -- David Searle, Stanford; Kendy Kuczka, Southern Methodist. Division II -- Thomas Moore, High Point; Marsha Jance, St. Joseph's (Indiana). Division III -- Andrew Wilkinson, Denison; Gina Cesaretti, Cornell. The awards are presented to graduating varsity collegiate golfers planning to continue on to an accredited postgraduate program.

DEATHS

Matthew Weiner, a member of the varsity Princeton swimming and diving team, died of a cardiac arrest on March 22 while playing basketball with teammates. Weiner competed in the 200-yard butterfly, individual medley and 500-yard freestyle events.

Massachusetts junior lacrosse player Eric Sopracasa died after being struck in the chest with a ball during practice. Sopracasa was 21.

Billy "Red" Hendrix, former LSU football player, died May 4 at the age of 64. Hendrix, a left defensive end, was captain of the 1958 national champion LSU football team. Hendrix coached on the high-school level and at Northeastern Louisiana before retiring as a high-school principal.
