While at Tufts, Brown was presented with the Rudolph J. Fobart Award, which is given to multisport athletes with good academic average and demonstrated potential for leadership.

Brown was a three-year captain of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams and competed four times in NCAA Division III track and field national championships. She also participated in varsity soccer.

Brown earned a master of arts in urban and environmental policy from Tufts in 1989 and was awarded a doctor of jurisprudence from the College of William and Mary in 1992.
