Seasiders win 20 of 21 matches en route to tennis title

Brigham Young-Hawaii made a strong impression in its first appearance in the Division II Women's Tennis Championship, defeating Armstrong Atlantic, 5-1, in the title match May 17 at West Florida.

The Seasiders won two of three doubles matches and sealed its championship by winning three singles matches.

Armstrong Atlantic placed second for the third straight time.

"We thought we had a good enough team to win it, but we knew we'd have to play up to our potential to get the job done," said Seasiders head coach Dave Porter.

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Petra Gaspar and Karin Ptaszek combined to defeat Armstrong Atlantic's Elissa Bennett and Maren Mueller, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. Then teammates Tomoko Sukegawa and Maylani Ah Hoy downed Marie-Claude Ostiguy and Petra Schemm, 8-5.

The Seasiders continued their domination in singles. Gaspar defeated Mueller at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Nordwall beat Juliette van der Eerden of Armstrong Atlantic at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Hana Krivonozkova secured the team victory with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Ostiguy at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Pirates' lone win came at No. 2 doubles, where Adolfina Hadamovsky teamed with van der Eerden to beat Nordwall and Linda Jansson, the only loss suffered by the Seasiders in the four-round tournament.

Brigham Young-Hawaii breezed into the final match by posting 5-0 scores in the first three rounds against Central Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and Georgia C&SU.

Georgia C&SU posted a victory against two-time defending champion Lynn in the third-place match, winning two of three doubles points and three singles matches.
