Ohio names Bria as head basketball coach
Ohio has hired Lynn Bria as head women's basketball coach. Bria succeeds Marsha Reall, whose contract was not renewed after nine seasons.
As head women's basketball coach at Central Florida for the past three seasons, Bria has compiled a 50-36 record. She led last year's squad to the Trans America Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason titles. Prior to her stint at Central Florida, Bria served as head women's basketball coach at Texas Woman's University for three seasons. She also has been an assistant at Marshall for two seasons and at Radford for one season.
Collegiately, Bria competed in tennis and basketball at Charleston (West Virginia). She captured first team all-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognition in both sports as a senior.
Bria earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1990 from Charleston (West Virginia) and a master of arts degree in physical education in 1992 from Marshall.

Jeff Davis hired as associate athletics director for facilities at Houston. For the past seven years, Davis has been assistant athletics director for operations and equipment at East Carolina.

Minnesota announced the resignation of Doug Woog, men's ice hockey coach, to become assistant athletics director ... Erskine hired Mark Peeler as assistant athletics director and head men's basketball coach. Peeler, who succeeds Ralph Patterson as head basketball coach, has been head men's basketball coach at St. Andrews for three seasons ... Northern Colorado chose Bill Chaves as assistant athletics director/development. Chaves, currently completing work on a second master's degree in sport management, was director of athletics and intramurals for Enfield (Connecticut) Public Schools from 1995 to 1998.

Baseball -- Tony Casas resigned as head coach at South Carolina-Aiken, effective at the end of the season ... Henderson State hired Pete Southall as head coach, effective at the end of the season. Southall currently is the pitching coach at Southern Arkansas.
Men's basketball -- Wisconsin-Milwaukee hired William F. "Bo" Ryan as head coach. Ryan, the most-victorious basketball coach in Division III, has captured four Division III national championships in 15 seasons as head coach at Wisconsin-Platteville ... Ralph Willard hired as head coach at Holy Cross to succeed Bill Raynor. Willard has been head coach at Pittsburgh since 1995 ... Field hockey -- Wittenberg's Linda Arena resigned after 16 years as head coach, but will continue to teach at the school. Arena, named North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times, has a 266-136-45 career record and has served on the NCAA Field Hockey and Softball Committees.
Field hockey assistant -- Christine McGinley accepted assistant coach responsibilities at Cornell.
Football -- Bill George appointed as head coach at Coast Guard ... Siena announced the appointment of Ron James as head coach ... Sherman Wood chosen as head coach at Salisbury State. For the past six years, Wood has been head coach at Bowie State.

Men's and women's golf -- Akron head men's golf coach Rick Jones announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2000. Jones, head coach for the past five years, will finish this season as head coach and work as an assistant with the program during the 1999-00 season.
Men's and women's skiing -- St. Michael's director of skiing and Nordic ski coach Dale Rodgers resigned.
Women's soccer -- St. Thomas (Minnesota) named Colleen Carey as head coach ... Catherine Byrne chosen as head coach at Methodist. Byrne has been head women's soccer and head women's tennis coach at Mount Union ... Susquehanna head men's soccer coach Jim Findlay accepted additional responsibilities as head women's soccer coach. Findlay replaces Jane Wildman ... Ingrid Wagner accepted head coaching responsibilities at Baldwin-Wallace after serving as an assistant with the program for the past two years. Wagner replaces Dan White ... Cal State Northridge appointed Allison Lee as head coach.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Miami (Florida) appointed James Sweeney as head men's and women's coach. Sweeney has been interim head coach of the program since October 1998.
Men's and women's tennis -- Trent Aaron resigned as head men's coach at Loyola Marymount, effective at the end of the 1999 season.
Men's and women's track and field -- Ron Warhurst promoted to head coach at Michigan, succeeding Jack Harvey, who retired. Warhurst has been an assistant track and field coach and head men's cross country coach.
Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Michigan named Fred LaPlante as an assistant coach.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Lewis and Clark head women's coach Kathy Walker resigned after seven years ... Kathy McDaniel resigned as head women's coach at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Santa Clara appointed Jon Wallace to succeed Annie Feller as head women's coach. Wallace has been an assistant at Pepperdine for seven years ... Buffalo added Nadine Lilavois as head women's coach ... Western Illinois chose Michelle Gomez as head coach. Development -- Bob Beamon, 1968 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump, appointed as director of development and head men's and women's track and field teams at Florida Atlantic. The women's team will begin competition next spring and the men's squad is scheduled to begin by 2001.

CONFERENCES
L.V. McGinty named coordinator of football officiating for the Ohio Valley Conference to succeed R.L. "Buddy" Patey. McGinty has been a football official with the conference for 18 years and has worked three Division I-AA national championships.
Brad Walker hired as assistant director of media relations at the Mid-Continent Conference. For the past year, Walker has been a sports information intern at Holy Cross.
The Mid-American Conference named Kim Vieira as men's and women's soccer assignor for officials. Vieira has been coordinator of referees for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference for five seasons.
ASSOCIATIONS
The Amateur Softball Association of America/USA Softball selected Brian McCall as director of communications. For the past three years, McCall has been coordinator of information services for the organization and most recently served as interim director of communications.

Colin Chappell hired as programmer/

CORRECTION
An article about automatic qualification in women's lacrosse in the March 29 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly referred to William Smith College as a two-time runner-up in the Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Herons have in fact placed second five times.

Former Westminster (Missouri) coach Dick Ault named to the National High School Sports Hall of Fame. Ault, who coached cross country, track, swimming and golf at Westminster (Missouri) for 29 years before retiring in 1997, earned a place in the Hall of Fame for his work as a high-school official in track and field and cross country for 49 years and football for 44 years.
Jeff Morrison, a sophomore at Florida, and Julie Ditty, a sophomore at Vanderbilt, selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Players of the Month for March. The National Doubles Teams of the Month were Cary Franklin and Oliver Freelove of Illinois, and Zuzana Lesenarova and Katarina Valkyova of San Diego.
The All-American Football Foundation, Inc. named the following 10 football players as Col. Earl (Red) Blaik Leadership Scholarship winners: Ricky Williams, Texas; Cade McNown, UCLA; Shaun King, Tulane; Kevin Faulk, LSU; Dat Nguyen, Texas A&M; Michael Bishop, Kansas State; Brian Shay, Emporia State; Lee Roberts, Southern Mississippi; Aaron Smith, Northern Colorado; and Chris Griesen, Northwest Missouri State. The organization also named the following coaches as Frank Leahy Coaches of the Year: Phil Fulmer, Tennessee; Mark Whipple, Massachusetts; Mel Tjeerdsma, Northwest Missouri State; and Larry Kehres, Mount Union.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Collegiate Men's Tennis Hall of Fame selected the following as 1999 inductees: Tim Gullikson, Northern Illinois; Tom Gullikson, Northern Illinois; Wallace Johnson, Pennsylvania; Mel Purcell, Tennessee; Bill Scanlon, Trinity (Texas); John Whitlinger, Stanford; and Bennie Purcell, a former coach at Murray State.
Martina Moravcova selected as Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in swimming and diving. Moravcova, a senior at Southern Methodist, has earned 10 NCAA career individual titles, more than any woman in modern-day swimming and diving. She also has been a 25-time all-America and a 26-time Western Athletic Conference champion.
Former Michigan Tech head men's ice hockey coach John MacInnes named recipient of a Legend of College Hockey Award. Recognition will be in conjunction with the Hobey Baker Memorial Award dinner honoring the 1999 Hobey Baker winner Jason Krog. MacInnes, who captured three national championships in 26 seasons as head coach, passed away in 1983. This marks the first time the Hobey Baker committee has awarded the honor posthumously.
The following individuals have been selected as 1999 Divisional Inductees of the College Football Hall of Fame: George Bork, Northern Illinois (1960-63); Teel Bruner, Centre (1982-85); George Floyd, Eastern Kentucky (1978-81); Willie Galimore, Florida A&M (1953-56); Jim LeClair, North Dakota (1970-71); Randy Trautman, Boise State (1961-64); coach Billy Nicks, Morris Brown (1930-42) and Prairie View A&M (1945-47, 52-65); and coach James Sochor, UC Davis (1970-89).
Stephen Neal, a senior at Cal State Bakersfield, named recipient of the 1999 W.I.N. magazine/International Wrestling Institute and Museum Dan Hodge Trophy awarded to collegiate wrestling's most dominant athlete in the country. Neal, who has captured two heavyweight national championships, closed his career with a 156-10 mark, a school record for career wins.
DEATHS
Former Florida State coach H. Donald Loucks died of heart failure April 6 at the age of 84. The school's first men's basketball coach, he compiled a 5-13 mark in 1947, the only season he coached the program. Loucks, who was inducted as a member of the school's hall of fame in 1985, also coached tennis at the school beginning in 1947.
Senior Texas-Pan American track and field student-athlete Angela Proctor was killed in a head-on automobile collision. Proctor, an anthropology major and history minor, competed in the hurdles and multievents.
Former Canisius student-athlete Bill Bennett died April 9 at the age of 61. Bennett was a guard on the basketball team during the 1958-59 and 1960-61 seasons and also competed in track and field.
Edward "Bull" Cavanaugh, former high-school, college and National Football League coach, died from heart failure March 21 in Vero Beach, Florida. He was 70. Cavanaugh served as an assistant at Arizona, Utah State, Miami (Florida) and Kansas State and head coach at Idaho State and Army. The 1988 Connecticut Coaches Hall of Fame inductee also was an assistant with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL.
Former Southern Connecticut State President Manson Van B. Jennings, died March 16. He was 82.
Cecil G. (Pete) Taylor, former chancellor at LSU, died April 1 at the age of 89.
