Six Stanford players top water polo coaches academic team

Six members of Stanford University's men's water polo team, which finished runner-up at the 1998 championship, are among the individuals named to the 1998-99 American Water Polo Coaches Association all-academic team.

David Hay, Brian Heifferon, Michael Lipinski, Jeremiah Robison, Jon Skaalen and Andy Walburger are among a group of 149 individuals named to the team. Heifferon earned all-tournament accolades in helping Stanford advance to the 1998 championship game. The Cardinal dropped a 9-8 double-overtime decision to the University of Southern California.

Fourteen teams also were honored, including St. Francis College (New York), which posted the highest grade-point average at 3.510 (4.000 scale).

The all-academic team is comprised of student-athletes who compiled at least a 3.200 grade-point average (4.000 scale); teams honored compiled at least a 2.750 GPA.

Princeton University placed the most individuals on the team with 10, while the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Massachesetts Institute of Technology each placed nine individuals on the team.
