Infractions appeal: University of Cincinnati

The Division I Committee on Infractions has reduced the show-cause penalty for a former assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Cincinnati.

The length of the penalty was reduced from August 7, 1998, through August 6, 1999, to August 7, 1998, through April 1, 1999. A show-cause penalty requires any NCAA member institution seeking to employ an individual subject to show-cause provisions to appear before the Committee on Infractions.

The Committee on Infractions determines whether the individual's athletically related duties should be limited for a designated period of time.

The committee said its intention in imposing the penalty initially was that the former assistant coach should not be restricted in coaching duties for more than one year. Following a review of the length of time the penalty was to be imposed, however, the committee said it became apparent that the effect of the penalty could extend it for another year because of traditional hiring practices in the sport of men's basketball.

The committee issued its public report regarding Cincinnati on November 5, 1998. Various penalties were assessed for violations in the men's basketball program of NCAA recruiting, extra benefits, ethical conduct and institutional control bylaws.
