Auburn returns to throne in battle of perennial powers

Auburn and Stanford faced off for the third consecutive year as favorites to claim the Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships team title.

In the end it was Auburn that avenged last year's runner-up finish to Stanford, scoring 467 1/2 points to earn its second team victory in three years March 25-27 at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Relays were pivotal for the Tigers, who won four of five during the three-day meet. In fact, Auburn opened and closed the meet with first-place finishes and record-setting performances.

Brock Newman, Matt Busbee, Brett Hawke and Aaron Ciarla won the 200-yard freestyle relay, the first event of the meet, and set a record of 1:16.50 in the preliminaries.

Newman, Hawke and Ciarla combined with Romain Barnier to win the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, also in a record time of 2:50.90.

In addition to the Tigers' four relay victories, Auburn boasted three individual champions. Dave Denniston won the 200-yard breaststroke, Lionel Moreau won the 200-yard individual medley and Ciarla claimed the 50-yard freestyle title.

Stanford was led by Tate Blahnick's second-straight 200-yard backstroke title and Dod Wales' first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

Arizona's Ryk Neethling defended his 200- and 500-yard freestyle wins and claimed the 1,650-yard freestyle for the third consecutive year.

Texas, which finished third, was led by Troy Dumais, who won the three-meter diving event and was second in the one-meter and platform diving competition.

Rio Ramirez of Miami (Florida) won the one-meter event for the third straight year and added a first-place finish in the platform event to his championship achievements.
