Record-breaking performances propel Kenyon to 16th women's swimming title

Kenyon College ran away with its16th straight team title in the Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Oxford, Ohio, March 11-13.

Kenyon, which started its title dominance in 1984, scored 6641/2 points to top second-place Denison and third-place Williams during the three-day meet.

Sophomore Erica Carroll led the way for the Ladies, setting two championship records, winning three individual titles and contributing to a relay victory. Carroll, who was named swimmer of the year for her performance, finished the 200-yard backstroke in a record 2:01.78. She also broke the record in the 100-yard butterfly that had stood since 1988, swimming to a first-place finish with a time of 56.16.

Senior Amelia Armstrong defended her title in the 400-yard individual medley for Kenyon and also was the titlist in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Marisha Stawiski claimed her third straight win in the 100-yard freestyle and a second consecutive 200-yard freestyle crown.

Sophomore Michelle Engelsman won the 50-yard freestyle, keeping Stawiski from her fourth straight title in the event. Stawiski finished second this year.

Denison led after the first day of competition by capturing the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Allison Edsall, Bethany Tucke, Katie O'Connor and Kelly Lotts won the event with a record time of 1:32.93. The record had been set by Kenyon one year ago at 1:33.68.

Williams' Erin Anderson established a record in the 200-yard breaststroke, bettering the previous mark of 2:19.69 by .50 seconds. She also won the 100-yard breaststroke, sweeping the events for a third consecutive year. Teammate Jessica Stokes won her second straight 200-yard individual medley crown in 2:04.99, a two-second improvement from last year's title swim.

Nora Kelly of Springfield won both the one- and three-meter diving events.
