TOP 20: Bevy of individual event winners keep Kenyon's men's swimming streak intact

Tom Rushton and Estevao Avila fueled Kenyon's 20th straight Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships team title March 18-20 at Minnesota.

The Lords took 10 individual first-place titles and scored 670 points. Second-place Denison had 383 1/2 points in the meet while UC San Diego claimed third place with 289 points.

Rushton successfully defended his 500-yard freestyle title during the first day of competition with a time of 4:32.15. The sophomore also won his second championship in the 400-yard individual medley.

Avila also claimed two titles during the three-day meet, winning the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. His preliminary time of 49.31 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke was a meet record.

Kenyon swept the top three spots in 200-yard freestyle and also claimed first-place finishes in the 200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle relays and the 200-yard medley relay.

Denison's Aaron Cole was named swimmer of the meet. The junior set a meet record in the preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke, then took second in the finals. He also won the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.

Hope's Joshua Boss made a splash in his first championships, winning the 200-yard breaststroke in a meet-record time of 2:00.53. The freshman also won the 100-yard breaststroke.

John Karpe from Wisconsin-Eau Claire earned diver of the year honors after claiming the three-meter diving championship with a score of 559. He also took second in the one-meter event. Kalamazoo's Jeff Gorton repeated as one-meter titlist.
