Middlebury extends ice hockey dominance with 5-0 triumph
Middlebury added to its supremacy in Division III ice hockey by claiming an unprecedented fifth consecutive title at Norwich March 20.
Nickolai Bobrov and Ben Barnett scored two goals apiece and Jon Marsh turned back all 12 Wisconsin-Superior shots as the Panthers blanked the Yellowjackets, 5-0.
The victory enabled Middlebury to become the first NCAA team to win five consecutive titles and also the first Division III program to win five titles. The Panthers, who dropped their first game of the tournament, a 4-2 decision at St. Norbert on March 12, reeled off three consecutive wins to improve their championship record to 19-1. Middlebury defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 9-3, in semifinal action.
"Of the five championships, this one is probably the most satisfying," said Middlebury coach Bill Beaney. "We went through a rough stretch early in the season, but we improved as the season went on. I couldn't be prouder of a group of young men."
Wisconsin-Superior (22-8-3), which defeated host Norwich, 4-2, in the semifinals, finished runner-up for the second time in three years and third time overall.
Norwich (27-2-2), which served as host for the first time, defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (26-3-2), 9-3, in the third-place game.
Middlebury secured its place among the NCAA elite as Bobrov and Barnett each registered goals in both the first and second periods.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead as Bobrov and John Giannacopoulos combined to set up Barnett for a power-play goal from the left point with seven minutes, 47 seconds remaining in the first period. Bobrov, who scored the championship-winning goal in the Panthers' 2-1 victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1998, struck again less than five minutes later for a 2-0 advantage. Bobrov and Barnett broke the game open with two more goals in the first 6:34 of the second period. Jack Kennedy closed out the scoring with 57 seconds left in the period.
Middlebury outshot the Yellowjackets, 10-3, in the second period and 32-12 overall.
"It's been such a roller-coaster of a season and it's been an unbelievable ride. I can't believe this feeling," said Bobrov, who assisted on two Panthers goals in the championship game.
Staked to a five-goal lead, Marsh turned back all five third-period shots by the Yellowjackets to record the first shutout in the championship game since the Panthers blanked Fredonia State, 1-0, in 1995.
"No one was going to beat them tonight," said Wisconsin-Superior coach Steve Nelson. "They showed why they're such great champions."
In the third-place game, Aaron Phelan scored three goals as Norwich tallied six power-play goals to defeat Rochester Institute of Technology.
