Panthers' fast start notches third women's swim crown

Two-time defending champion Drury mounted a 30-point lead during the opening day of the Division II Swimming and Diving Championships and held off a North Dakota rally to win the team title March 10-13 in Buffalo, New York.

It was not a runaway victory for the Panthers, who had captured back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998 by more than 190-point margins. North Dakota actually led during the second day of competition, but in the end Drury's 10 first-place finishes and 613 points were too much for the Fighting Sioux, who finished with 603 1/2 points. It was the closest championship since 1990.

Drury's Kathleen Hayes captured a meet-high three individual titles, including the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and the 200-yard butterfly. In addition, Megan Krueger, winner of the 50-yard freestyle, combined with Christen Rhodes, Vanessa Young and Viktoria Gadd to win the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Young captured the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, while Gadd was the 1,650-yard freestyle winner. Drury won the 800-yard freestyle relay behind Gadd, Rhodes, Hayes and Jennifer Clark, while Cortney Martellucci combined with Hayes, Krueger and Young for the 400-yard freestyle relay crown.

Runner-up North Dakota won the 200- and 400-medley relays, and the Fighting Sioux's Rebecca Fisher was the 400-yard individual medley champion. Beth Morris won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Fighting Sioux.

St. Cloud State's Mary Ahlin defended her one- and three-meter diving titles, scoring 406 and 470.80 points respectively. Stephanie Sutton took second in both diving events for Clarion, totaling 394.20 points in the one-meter event and 461.35 on the three-meter.

Bryna Busch helped Truman State to a third-place finish by winning the 100-yard freestyle and taking second in the 200-yard freestyle. It was the best finish ever for Truman State, which had finished fourth in 1998.

Clarion claimed fourth place with 370 points on the strength of Christina Tillotson's victory in the 200-yard individual medley and Nikki Diloreto's 200-yard breaststroke title. Clarion, which won championships in 1983, 1984 and 1986, was third in last year's meet.

Erin Vostad helped Northern Michiganfinish fifth with her title in the 100-yard butterfly.
