Home is sweet -- Bulldogs take women's swimming title

Georgia claimed its first Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships title in front of a home crowd at Gabrielsen Natatorium March 18-20.

"What a feeling. It's really a dream come true," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "It really feels good to win it at home."

The Bulldogs ousted defending champion Stanford, outscoring the second-place Cardinal 5041/2 to 441 during the three-day event. Southern Methodist took third with 3701/2 points.

Georgia led by six points over Southern Methodist after the first day of competition without a first-place finish. Kristy Kowal defended her 100-yard breaststroke title to give the host its first individual champion. The junior was named swimmer of the meet after she won the 200-yard breaststroke in a meet-record 2:07.66.

Depth kept the Bulldogs at the top of the standings until Julie Varozza broke through to win the 1,650-yard freestyle during the final day of the championship. Keegan Walkley followed with a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, upsetting defending champion Misty Hyman of Stanford.

Second-place Stanford was led by Catherine Fox, who won her third consecutive 50-yard freestyle and took second in the 100-yard backstroke.

The junior joined Cardinal teammates to claim first-place in the 400-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Hyman won the 100-yard butterfly for the second time in her career.

Martina Moravcova won three individual titles in the final meet of her career for Southern Methodist. She won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. She has won 10 individual championships over the past four years and never lost in the 200-yard freestyle, an event for which she still owns the record.

California's Marylyn Chiang kept Fox from winning her third consecutive 100-yard backstroke championship with a record-setting swim. Also, Limin Liu won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.36, breaking a record set in 1992 by Stanford's Summer Sanders.
