Colorado keeps its edge and captures second consecutive skiing championship
Colorado won three events en route to its second consecutive National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships team title March 10-13.
The Buffaloes outlasted Denver in the team scoring, 650 to 636.
Host Bates staged the Alpine (downhill) events at Sunday River and the Nordic (cross country) events at Black Mountain.
The women's Alpine squad led the way for the Buffaloes, who increased their all-time team championship total to 15, one more than Denver. The title was the fourth under coach Richard Rokos. Aimee-Noel Hartley of Colorado claimed the women's giant slalom in 2:22.91, while teammate Linda Wikstrom finished third. Wikstrom won the women's slalom in 1:45.08. Hartley finished sixth.
The Buffaloes also got a one-two finish in the men's 20-kilometer classical cross country race. Ove Erik Tronvoll took first with a time of 56.17.0, followed by Magnus Ericksson, whose time was 57:53.2. Tronvoll finished eighth in the same race last year.
The individual titles raised Colorado's overall total to 66. Denver won two individual crowns to improve its mark in that category to 55. In the men's slalom, Jayme Smithers won with a time of 1:33.32. In the 15-kilometer classical cross country race, Britta Wienand won in 51:11.6. Wienand also finished third in the five-kilometer freestyle cross country race.
The individual spotlight belonged to Dartmouth's David Viele, who became the first men's giant slalom champion to successfully defend the title. His time was 2:11.63. Utah's Rune Kollerud won the men's 10-kilometer freestyle cross country race in 27:19.6, and his brother Frode placed second in 27:26.1.
The Utes' individual champion total increased to 52, third on the all-time list.
The lone champion for third-place Vermont was Ekaterina Ivanova, who won the women's five-kilometer freestyle cross country race with a time of 15:17.9. She was second in the 15-kilometer classical cross country race. The title increased the Catamounts' all-time individual total to 46.
