Knorr-Moliken to lead Ursinus field hockey
Ursinus has hired Laura Knorr-Moliken as head field hockey coach. Knorr-Moliken succeeds Vonnie Gros, who retired after the 1998 season.
Since 1995, Knorr-Moliken has been head coach at William Penn High School in Newcastle, Delaware. She led her 1997 squad to the state championship game.
As a student-athlete at Old Dominion, Knorr-Moliken competed in field hockey from 1989-1992 and helped lead the Monarchs to three national championships and a four-year mark of 98-4-1. She served as team captain and gained NCAA all-tournament team recognition in 1990 and 1992. As a senior, she was honored as a second-team all-America selection. Knorr-Moliken also has played on the U.S. National Field Hockey Team.

Saint Leo appointed Fran Reidy, associate athletics director for the past two years, as athletics director to succeed Ted Owens, who resigned. Reidy, who also has been compliance officer for the past three years and head men's soccer coach for 11 years, will retain his compliance duties until July 1 and continue as head men's soccer coach indefinitely ... Tampa athletics director Hindman Wall announced plans to retire, effective July 31.

Georgia Southern named Tom Norton as assistant athletics director for business to succeed Brad Stricklin. Norton, who has been the school's director of soccer since 1996 and head women's soccer coach since 1993, will retain his head coaching duties ... Akron elevated Mike Rodriguez to assistant athletics director for business, Riko Chung to assistant athletics director for facilities and operations and Vinny Maculaitis to assistant athletics director for external relations. Rodriguez has been business manager since 1992, and Chung has served as director of athletics and recreational facilities for the past two and a half years. Maculaitis was director of sports marketing/promotions.

Wisconsin head women's coach John Cook resigned to replace Cathy Noth as associate head coach at Nebraska. Cook closes a seven-year stint at Wisconsin with a 160-72 mark. Athletic business services--Jeff Pritsker named athletic business manager at Marquette after serving in the same capacity at South Dakota State since May 1998.
Athletic training--Alabama added Chris Gillespie as head football athletic trainer. Gillespie, who replaces Bill McDonald, has been head athletic trainer and director of athletic training education at Samford for the past 15 years.
Compliance--Robert Mathner named as director of athletics compliance at Syracuse.
Development--Patrick J. Tevlin appointed as executive director of Lenior-Rhyne's Piedmont Educational Foundation. Most recently, Tevlin served as associate director at the Rutgers University Foundation ... Northeastern director of athletics development, Robert M. Turcotte, resigned to become director of Rhode Island's private fund-raising campaign for a new Convocation Center.
Sports information--Bradley hired Bobby Parker as sports information director. Parker has been sports information director at Creighton since 1996 ... Matt Howell resigned as sports information director at Dickinson to join the school's computer services department.
CONFERENCES
The Pacific-10 Conference chose Gooch Foster as coordinator of women's basketball officiating to succeed Carter Rankin, who announced plans to retire at the end of the season. From 1979-96, Foster was head coach at California and is a past president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Amy Turner accepted the position of assistant commissioner, communications, with the Mountain West Conference. Turner most recently has been associate athletics director at Portland State.

CORRECTIONS
The Division I men's basketball championship preview story in the March 1 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly identified the number of teams from Florida who have competed in the Final Four. Three squads from the state, Jacksonville in 1970, Florida State in 1972 and Florida in 1994, have made Final Four appearances.
The recruiting calendar in the March issue of The NCAA News incorrectly described a contact period for men's basketball. The early April contact period runs through April 4.

Frank Uryasz, NCAA director of sports sciences, earned a Certified Association Executive designation from the American Society of Association Executives. The designation indicates demonstrated leadership skills, activity in community affairs and expertise in association management.
Rudy Tomjanovich named as head coach of USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team, which is slated to compete in the 1999 qualification tournament for the 2000 Olympics. Tomjanovich is head coach of the National Basketball Association's Houston Rockets.
Ryan Robertson, basketball player at Kansas, was named the 1999 PaineWebber Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Robertson, a senior guard, is a business administration major and a 1998 first-team all-Big 12 Conference academic selection.
DEATHS
Harold Thomas Friermood, a major influence in the movement to make volleyball an Olympic sport, died Tuesday, March 2. Friermood served as an executive board member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. He also was a past president of USA Volleyball from 1952-55 and worked as vice-president of the International Volleyball Federation and the International Council for Sport and Physical Education. Friermood is a member of the YMCA Hall of Fame and the Volleyball Hall of Fame.
Former George Washington athletics director Robert K. Faris died February 14 at the age of 81.
