Facilities: Ferris State University has christened its men's ice hockey locker room at the R. L. Ewigleben Ice Arena. The 4,560-square-foot annex is part of the multiphase and ongoing Ice Arena Remodeling Project. Ferris State, a Division II school, sponsors men's ice hockey at the Division I level.

Sports sponsorship: The University of South Alabama will discontinue its men's soccer program, effective immediately. Men's soccer had been an intercollegiate sport at the school for 21 years. The change in sponsorship brings the total number of sports offered at South Alabama to 15 ... Mercyhurst College will begin a Division I women's ice hockey program for the 1999-2000 season. The women's team will join the men's ice hockey team as the two Division I sports sponsored by the Division II school. The addition balances the number of men's and women's sports offered at 11 each.

Milestones: Brian Cavanaugh, Canisius College, 250 wins in men's ice hockey. Cavanaugh is 250-218-32 in 18 seasons and ranks 64th on the all-time Division I victory list.

Etc.: The University of Notre Dame's Board of Trustees reaffirmed the recommendation that Notre Dame retain its standing as an independent institution. The decision culminated a process of information- sharing between Notre Dame and both the Big Ten Conference and the Committee for Institutional Cooperation, the academic consortium of Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
