Committee approves new rule in track
The NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee has approved an addition to the 1999 rules concerning the indoor weight throw.
During its monthly conference call in January, the committee voted in favor of additions to Rule 10-9-5 on pages 118 and 119 of the 1999 NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Rules.
The affected rule should now read: "The grip shall be connected to the ball by means of a chain link, links or steel line whose thickness shall be such that it cannot stretch while the implement is being thrown.
"The grip shall be connected to the link(s) or steel line by means of a loop. A functional swivel may not be used.
"The link(s) or steel line shall be connected to the ball by means of a swivel that may be either plain or ball-bearing."
The addition was made to make legal a weight implement that was manufactured after the track and field committee's June 1998 meeting.
