Petrucelli assumes soccer post at Texas
Texas has hired Chris Petrucelli as head women's soccer coach. He replaces Dang Pibulvech, whose contract was not renewed after the 1998 season.
For the past nine years, Petrucelli has piloted the women's soccer program at Notre Dame. During his tenure, the school has collected eight straight conference championships, competed in four straight national semifinals between 1994 and 1997 and captured the national championship in 1995. In 1994 and 1995, he was selected as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Coach of the Year. He is the only coach to win the honor in consecutive years.
Petrucelli earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration at North Carolina-Greensboro and competed on the school's 1982 and 1983 NCAA Division II national championship teams.
Petrucelli is a former chair of the NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Rules Committee and has been a member of the committee since 1993.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Charles H. Moore, director of athletics and physical education at Cornell for the past four years, announced plans to retire, effective upon the selection of a successor.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR
Michigan State appointed Shelley Appelbaum as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director to replace Kathy Lindahl, who was promoted to assistant vice-president for finance. Appelbaum closes a five-year stint at Bowling Green, where she most recently served as senior associate athletics director.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Maryland promoted Rob Mullens to associate athletics director for administration. Mullens had served on an interim basis since last May and has been with Maryland as an assistant athletics director for business since summer 1996 ... CONFERENCES
Nancy Smith selected as interim director of media relations at the Mid-Continent Conference, effective January 13, 1999. Smith succeeds Jeff Reynolds, an assistant commissioner, who resigned.
Mark Mentone, sports information assistant at Southern Connecticut State, accepted additional duties as media relations director for the New England Collegiate Confer-
ence. Mentone succeeds Doug Monson, who became sports information director at American International.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Mike Bailey appointed as licensing coordinator. Bailey most recently served as licensing manager at Churchill Downs, Inc. ... Todd Greenwood selected as sales and marketing manager for the Hall of Champions. Greenwood most recently served as a national sales manager for the Indiana Convention and Visitors Association.
NOTABLES
The Walter Camp Football Foundation named Lou Holtz as 1998 Man of the Year. Holtz, recently appointed head football coach at South Carolina, formerly served as head football coach at Notre Dame, where he compiled a 100-30-4 record and led the school to nine straight bowl appearances.
G. K. "Joe" Guennel selected as a 1999 inductee into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Guennel has assisted in the establishment of numerous college-level soccer programs nationwide, including Denver and Indiana, where he was head coach from 1949 to 1959. He also was instrumental in the creation of several high-school soccer programs as well as soccer coaches and soccer officials' organizations.
DEATHS
Natasha Wakida Sachiko, the student who wore the mascot costume for UC Santa Cruz, died in an automobile collision December 25. Sachiko, 21, was a sophomore history and political science major. She played lacrosse for two years at the school and was on the volleyball team for one year.
Ron Chismar, former Arizona State offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, died December 26 at the age of 64. Chismar coached at Arizona State from 1980 to 1983 and served as head football coach at Wichita State from 1984-86. Chismar was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for two seasons at Rice and fulfilled similar duties for four years at Temple. In 1993, Chismar accepted the position of head football coach and athletics director at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College. He retired from coaching in 1996 and retired as athletics director last year.
Brian Fishman, a former member of the Michigan athletics media relations department, died January 7 from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. He was 28. Fishman had been manager, communications and marketing, for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program since September 1998.
Virginia L. Radley, former Oswego State president, died December 20. She was 71.
Former Houston golf coach Dave Williams died December 16 at the age of 80.
