Stanford's Leland appointed as chair of Management Council

Edward "Ted" Leland, athletics director at Stanford University, has been elected the new chair of the Division I Management Council. His two-year term will begin after the NCAA Convention in January.

Leland will replace Robert A. Bowlsby, athletics director at the University of Iowa, whose term on the Council expires in January 2001. Leland's term on the Council extends until January 2002.

Leland previously has served on the NCAA Council, Council Subcommittee on Playing and Practice Seasons, Council Subcommittee on Initial-Eligibility Waivers, Management Council Transition Team, Men's Water Polo Committee and Nominating Committee.

Also, Graham B. Spanier has been reelected as chair of the Division I Board of Directors. Spanier, president at Pennsylvania State University, will serve a new two-year term that will begin at the conclusion of the 1999 Convention.

Spanier assumed the role of chair of the Board in August when former chair Kenneth A. Shaw, chancellor at Syracuse University, agreed to chair the newly created Division I Working Group to Study Basketball Issues.
