Luong chosen as head volleyball coach
Wentworth Institute has named Phuong Luong head men's volleyball coach to succeed four-year head coach Jan Raich, who resigned.
Luong most recently served as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Northeastern. Prior to his one-season tenure there, Luong spent two seasons as an assistant women's coach at New Hampshire. From 1994 to 1996, he worked as a student/graduate assistant coach at Ferris State, in addition to fulfilling duties as head junior varsity volleyball coach at Big Rapids (Michigan) High School from 1993 to 1995. Luong coached the Reed City Smash AAU girls 18s elite squad in 1994, and in 1996 he coached the West Michigan Juniors AAU Girls 18s to a first-place finish in the Michigan AAU State Tournament.
A four-year member of the Ferris State men's club volleyball team, Luong also competed with the Grand Rapids (Michigan) AAU squad for three years.
Luong earned a bachelor's degree in business management with a minor in finance from Ferris State in 1995.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Robert Edson selected as associate athletics director for finance and team services at Syracuse. Edson, who succeeds Dennis Helsel, has been director of athletics compliance at the school for the past two years ... Georgia Southern promoted Paul Johnson to associate athletics director. Johnson, who will continue to serve as head football coach, has won two straight Southern Conference football championships and earned two consecutive conference coach-of-the-year honors since joining the program in 1997.

Miami (Florida) hired Rob Grady as assistant athletics director for marketing ... Paul Lizzo selected as assistant athletics director for external affairs at Ramapo ... Mastronardi presently serves as a teaching professional and director of golf operations at Golden Bear Golf Center in Elmsford, New York ... Maryland selected men's assistant golf coach Jason Rodenhaver as head women's golf coach, effective December 7. The women's program is scheduled to begin competition next fall.
Men's lacrosse--Paul Kieltyka selected as head coach at Kean ... Randy Mearns accepted head coaching duties at Canisius. Last season, Mearns served as an assistant with the program ... West Chester named Pat Cullinan interim head coach at West Chester, succeeding Bob Brinton, who resigned after 14 seasons. Cullinan has been an assistant with the program for 10 seasons.
Men's soccer--Blake New resigned as women's head soccer coach at Oberlin to become men's head soccer coach at the school. New, women's head coach for the past three seasons, succeeds Chris Barker, who resigned, effective February 1 ... Nova Southeastern head men's soccer coach, Frankie Delgado, resigned to become an assistant soccer coach at Radford ... Kwame Lloyd chosen as full-time director of soccer at Whittier. STAFF
Athletic training--Chris Schmidt elevated to full-time head athletic trainer at Whittier, succeeding Allison Shepherd, who became an assistant athletic trainer at Oregon. Schmidt has been an assistant athletic trainer at the school for two and a half years.
External affairs--St. Francis (Pennsylvania) appointed Scott Allen Goldberg director of external affairs for intercollegiate athletics. Goldberg has been northeast region sales director for Fairtron Corporation.
Recruiting--Wheeling Jesuit selected Guy Lucci as athletics recruiting coordinator.
Sports information--Hartford sports information director Jim Keener resigned.
Sports information assistant--George Washington elevated Chris Stockton to associate director of sports information. Since 1995, Stockton has been an assistant sports information director.
AGREEMENTS
Schafer Corporation named as an official sponsor of the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top collegiate ice hockey player. Established in 1972, Schafer is a high-technology company that offers digital video editing solutions in the athletics industry. The company also provides technical, professional and consulting services to industry and government.

George P. Evans named coordinator of men's basketball officials for the Southwestern Athletic Conference during the 1999-2000 season.
The Eastern College Athletic Conference hired Doug Loughrey as assistant commissioner for marketing and broadcast services.

Robert Dittrich hired as manager of corporate marketing. Dittrich most recently worked as a contemporary marketing team representative at Anheuser-Busch, Inc. ... Rhonda Winter appointed as director of information systems and technology. Winter most recently has been vice-president of information technology and operations for InterArt/Sunrise Publications in Bloomington, Indiana ... Richard Johanningmeier and Amanda Schuster selected as enforcement representatives. Johanningmeier most recently was athletics director at Illinois College and formerly served as an enforcement representative at the NCAA from 1986 to 1990. The Walter Camp Football Foundation, Inc., announced the following five candidates for the 1998 Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year award: Ricky Williams, Texas; Michael Bishop, Kansas State; Tim Couch, Kentucky; Joe Germaine, Ohio State; and Cade McNown, UCLA. The foundation also announced the following 10 head coaches as candidates for the 1998 Walter Camp Football Foundation/Street & Smith Coach of the Year award: Bill Snyder, Kansas State; Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee; Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin; Tommy Bowden, Tulane; Mack Brown, Texas; Fisher DeBerry, Air Force; Bob Davie, Notre Dame; Houston Nutt, Arkansas; Bob Toledo, UCLA; and Dick Tomey, Arizona.
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics inducted Steve Veal into its hall of fame. Veal, currently program director at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, worked at the NAIA from 1979 to 1993, a tenure that included stints as an assistant sports information director and vice-president of championships.
Cade McNown, senior quarterback at UCLA, has been named 1998 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner as the nation's top college quarterback. McNown, who has started 41 straight games for UCLA, has thrown for a school-record 9,855 yards and 61 touchdowns during his four-year career. The award is presented annually by the Frank Camp Chapter of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation.
DEATHS
Former Princeton track and field and cross country coach Larry Ellis died November 4. Ellis, 70, also served as head coach of the 1984 U.S. Olympic men's track and field team.
Former Akron basketball player Edward G. "Eddie" Elias died November 15 in Naples, Florida, from complications associated with pneumonia. Elias, 69, lettered in basketball at Akron in 1949 and 1950 before going on to establish the Professional Bowlers Association in 1958.
Tom Bilello, associate athletics director at Troy State, died November 28 after collapsing at the wheel while driving home from a Troy State football game. Bilello came to the school in 1997 as an assistant athletics director and was promoted to associate athletics director during the summer.
