Goff joins MCC as associate commissioner

The Midwestern Collegiate Conference has named Alfreeda Goff as associate commissioner/senior woman administrator. Goff assumes her new role after serving as director of athletics at Virginia State for the past four years.

Prior to her stint at Virginia State, Goff was an athletics administrator at Virginia Commonwealth, where she also was co-head coach of the women's basketball program during the 1988-89 season. She began her career in collegiate athletics in 1975 as an assistant women's track and field coach at Pittsburgh. In addition, Goff has worked on several athletics-related committees, including the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators Executive Committee and the NCAA Division II Management Council.

Goff earned bachelor's and master's degrees in health and physical education from Slippery Rock State in 1965 and Penn State in 1973, respectively.

Masters, chairman of marketing and entrepreneurship at California State Hayward, as president, effective January 1 ... Richard S. Millman, provost, dean of faculty and professor of mathematics at Whittier, chosen as president at Knox, effective January 1 ... Central Missouri State president Ed M. DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Irv Cross released as athletics director at Idaho State, effective at the end of his current contract ... Southwest Baptist selected Dennis Roland as athletics director. Roland, who also serves as head football coach at the school, succeeds Stephanie Miller ... Stan Williamson named as athletics director at Nicholls State. For the past four years, Williamson has served in various capacities in the athletics department at Houston.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Humboldt State named Patrick Daly as associate athletics director, effective January 4, 1999. Daly has been director of athletics at Marin Catholic (California) High School for the past five years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bradley named Dennis Kalina as assistant athletics director for marketing to succeed John Butler. For the last 18 months, Kalina has been fulfilling similar duties at Northwestern State ... Lynn Tighe named as an assistant athletics director at Villanova ... Kate Hickey appointed as assistant athletics director at Rutgers.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--Patrick Anderson named as an assistant coach at Hofstra ... Montclair State hired Barry Cohen and Joe Georgewitz as assistants ... James Madison added Chuck Bartlett as an assistant and promoted Terry Rooney to second assistant. For the past six seasons, Bartlett, who succeeds Todd Raleigh, has been an assistant at Kentucky. Rooney, who replaces Tony Dello, has been a volunteer assistant coach since January.

Men's basketball--Bluefield announced Tommy Brown as men's basketball coach ... Darelle Porter, head coach at Duquesne, awarded a three-year contract extension through 2001.

Men's basketball assistants--Alma added Jeff Curtis and Sam Hargraves as assistants ... Sean Kearney named associate coach at Delaware ... Misericordia chose Wayne Stevens as an assistant ... Nate Dixon added as an assistant at Queens (North Carolina).

Women's basketball--Cal State Northridge head coach Michael J. Abraham resigned. The school appointed Frozena Jerro as acting head coach.

Women's basketball assistants--Margaret Meagher Lonergan added as an assistant at American. Lonergan has been a women's basketball assistant at Mount St. Mary's (Maryland) ... Ron Mott accepted assistant coaching responsibilities at Alma ... Misericordia appointed Michele Gorski as an assistant ... Beth Gattuso chosen as an assistant at Queens (North Carolina).

Men's and women's cross country--Queens (North Carolina) selected Brett Honeycutt as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin in 1999-2000.

Football--Mike Kruczek elevated from interim to head coach at Central Florida ... Tom Walsh released as head coach at Idaho State, effective at the end of his current contract ... Dan McCarney, head coach at Iowa State, awarded a contract extension through the 2001 season ... Tom Herman resigned as head coach at Gannon, effective at the end of the school year ... VMI released Ted Cain as head coach and appointed athletics director Donny White as interim coach ... Cameron Cruickshank selected as coach at Tiffin.

Men's and women's golf assistant--Casey Whalen resigned as an assistant at UNLV.

Men's and women's gymnastics assistant--Yale added John Ceralde as women's assistant coach.

Women's ice hockey--Adam Brinker named head coach at Findlay. The school is scheduled to begin competition during the 1999-2000 academic year.

Men's lacrosse--Colorado College hired Kyle Hannan to succeed Steve Beville as head coach. Since 1993, Hannan, who also will serve as facilities manager for the school's ice rink, has been head men's lacrosse coach and sports information director at Virginia Wesleyan.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Jarred Testa hired as an assistant coach and assistant equipment manager at Merchant Marine.

Men's and women's skiing assistant--Macalester appointed Ed Kohler as assistant cross country skiing coach.

Men's soccer--Marywood head coach Stig Fromm resigned after two seasons ... Jason Tassinari selected as head coach at Stonehill ... Will Wiberg resigned as head coach at East Carolina ... Christopher Barker resigned as head men's soccer and tennis coach at Oberlin, effective February 1, 1999.

Women's soccer--Colorado College head coach Nicole Crepeau resigned ... Kelly Sack Baker resigned as coach at Rider ... Texas announced that it will not renew the contract of head coach Dang Pibulvech ... Kean head coach Fred Napoli resigned.

Softball--Leslie Phelan selected as head coach at Western Kentucky. The program is slated to begin competition during the 1999-2000 academic year. Phelan has been an assistant softball coach at Central Michigan for the past five years.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant--Alma named Marisa Proctor as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis--Southern Colorado men's and women's head coach Jeff Wrage resigned. Wrage has been head men's coach since 1992 and women's head coach since 1993.

Men's and women's track and field--Gustavus Adolphus appointed Tom Thorkelson as interim men's and women's head coach to replace Dixon Farmer, who resigned to become director of track and field at USA Track and Field ARCO Olympic Training Center in San Diego. Thorkelson has been an assistant with the program for the past 14 years ... Steve Thomas chosen as a men's assistant coach at Florida. For the past six years, Thomas has guided the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs at South Alabama.

Wrestling assistant--Virginia selected Brendan Buckley as an assistant.

STAFF

Facilities--Paul Lizzo, acting director of athletics facilities at Staten Island, resigned.

Intramural--Jim Belzer selected as intramural coordinator at Villanova.

Media relations--Villanova added Jon Gust as coordinator for media relations ... Georgia Southern hired Joey Warren as an assistant athletics media relations director, succeeding Carla Millard who assumed a similar post at Mississippi State. Warren has been a sportswriter for the Statesboro (Georgia) Herald.

Recreation sports--Daniel E. Simmons appointed director of recreation sports at Drexel.

Sports information--Texas A&M-Commerce selected Bill Powers as sports information director. Powers, who previously served in the same capacity at the school from 1987-95, has been the public information officer for the Texas Department of Transportation district office in Waco for the past year ... Chris Jackson hired as assistant sports information director at Nicholls State ... Chris Stockton elevated to associate director of sports information at George Washington. Stockton has been assistant director of sports information since 1995 ... Edinboro chose Robert V. Shreve as sports information director. Since 1990, Shreve has served as director of sports information at Gannon.

Sports information assistant--Dart Volz hired as associate sports information director at Akron, effective November 9. Volz has been assistant sports information director at Northwestern State for the past two years.

Athletics travel--Jennifer Brotschul promoted to athletics travel coordinator at Villanova.

AGREEMENTS

The Big 12 Conference and the Culligan Holiday Bowl renewed their association, making the Holiday Bowl one of six bowl agreements for the conference. A Big 12 team is scheduled to play the runner-up from the Pacific-10 Conference December 30 in San Diego, as long as there is not a Western Athletic Conference team ranked higher than the Big 12 team.

CONFERENCES

Anne Pufahl named Mid-Continent Conference supervisor of volleyball officials, succeeding Denise Izatt, who resigned. Pufahl has been an official for more than 11 years and has worked in the Big Ten Conference, Conference USA, Midwestern Collegiate Conference and Mid-Continent Conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference appointed Kevin Kelleher as compliance and championships assistant.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Jill Sutton resigned as assistant director of broadcast services to become a producer with Intersport Television in Chicago ... Licensing coordinator Kirby Hocutt resigned to accept a position in the University of Oklahoma development office ... Denise O'Grady named as a membership services representative ... Publications editor Ted Breidenthal resigned to become director of marketing at KC Slammer Baseball Bats. Breidenthal has been with the national office for 12 years.


NOTABLES

The following four football players have been announced as finalists for the 1998 Rotary Lombardi Award, given to the college football's top lineman: Aaron Gibson, Wisconsin; Andy Katzenmoyer, Ohio State; Dat Nguyen, Texas A&M; and Matt Stinchcomb, Georgia.

George E. Killian, International Basketball Federation president (1990-98) and executive director of the National Junior College Athletic Association for 29 years, was selected as winner of the Edward S. Steitz Award, which recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to international basketball. Killian is the first and only executive director of the NJCAA and has been a member of the International Olympic Committee and the boards of directors for the U.S Olympic Committee, United States Gymnastics Federation and United States Wrestling Federation.

Clem Haskins, head men's basketball coach at Minnesota, has been selected as USA Basketball's 1998 National Coach of the Year and Jim Boeheim, head men's basketball coach at Syracuse, named USA Basketball's 1998 Developmental Coach of the Year. Haskins led the USA Basketball Goodwill Games Team to a gold medal and a 4-1 record. Boeheim guided the USA Basketball Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team to a 6-0 mark and a gold medal.

David Gossett, a freshman at Texas, and Erin Carney, a senior at Indiana, recognized as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for October.

The following three football players were named finalists for the 1998 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented to the nation's top Division I-A place-kicker: Martin Gramatica, Kansas State; Sebastian Janikowski, Florida State and Nathan Villegas, Oregon.


DEATHS

Scott Wehnes, a defensive lineman at Charleston Southern, died November 3. Wehnes collapsed before a November 2 practice session. A junior college transfer majoring in business, Wehnes appeared in all eight of Charleston Southern's games this season, recording 11 tackles and one sack.

Wisconsin rowers Sarah Gornick and Jason Lundelius, died October 27, in separate incidents. Gornick, a junior majoring in biochemistry, died of bacterial meningitis. Lundelius, who died of injuries sustained in a biking accident during the summer, had been in a coma for more than two months. He was a senior English major.

A former president at Valparaiso, Albert P. Huegli, died October 18. Huegli was 85.

Former Purdue basketball player Paul Hoffman died of brain cancer November 12. Hoffman, who competed in the 1940s, was 73. Recently named one of Purdue's 12 all-time best basketball players, he went on to play for the Baltimore Bullets of the Basketball Association of America and was the organization's first rookie of the year in the late 1940s.

Former Central Missouri State women's assistant basketball coach Tia Sossamon died October 19, after suffering a sudden illness. She was 37. Sossamon coached at Central Missouri State from 1990-93 and spent five seasons as head coach at Alabama-Huntsville. She also played on two national championship teams as a student-athlete at Louisiana Tech, capturing the 1980 AIAW cham-pionship and the 1982 NCAA Division I championship.

Arthur Steinmetz, a redshirt defensive lineman at Kentucky, and another man were killed November 15 when their truck flipped on a highway. Kentucky starting center Jason Watts also was injured in the accident.
