Big 12 selects Weiberg as commissioner
The Big 12 Conference has chosen Kevin Weiberg as its commissioner, effective January 2. Weiberg replaces Steve Hatchell, who resigned, and interim commissioner Dave Martin, associate athletics director at Oklahoma State.
Weiberg comes to the Big 12 from the Big Ten Conference, where he most recently served as deputy commissioner of the conference, a position he had held since August. Before becoming deputy commissioner, Weiberg had been associate commissioner/chief operating officer at the Big Ten since 1989.
From 1987 to 1989, Weiberg fulfilled associate athletics director responsibilities at Maryland. He also spent seven years working in various capacities within the Wichita State athletics department, including associate athletics director, assistant athletics director and sports information director.
Weiberg earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Kansas State and a master of science degree in athletics administration from Western Illinois.

Albany named Robert Ford, head football coach at the school for 26 seasons, interim director of athletics. Ford, who succeeds Milton E. Richards, previously was athletics director at the school from 1977 to 1982.

Brian Miller, head men's basketball coach at Lakeland, accepted expanded duties as head women's golf coach at the school.
Women's ice hockey--Deb Lien announced as head coach at Concordia-Moorhead. The school plans to field a women's club team during the 1998-99 season and compete at the varsity level in 1999-2000. From 1997-98, Lien served as an assistant hockey coach at Moorhead (Minnesota) High School.
Men's lacrosse--Preston Chapman accepted the head coaching responsibilities at Alfred, succeeding Matt Kerwick. Chapman coached at Elmira for eight years in addition to working as an admissions counselor, and most recently, as assistant director of admissions at Elmira.
Women's lacrosse--Goucher hired Jennifer Hart as head women's lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach. Hart has been head women's lacrosse coach at College of New Jersey, where she guided the team to a perfect record and national title in 1998.
Men's and women's skiing--Smith announced Steven Samolewicz as head men's and women's coach succeeding Teresa Collins, who left to pursue opportunities in athletics administration.
Men's and women's soccer--Godwin Ihejeto appointed coach at Stillman ... Matt Grandstand named head men's and women's coach at Lakeland. Since 1996, Grandstand has been head coach at Page (Tennessee) High School.
Men's and women's soccer assistants--Lakeland added Jen Burchett as an assistant ... Russell Sage College hired Sherry Domagala as an assistant coach. For the past four seasons, Domagala has competed in the school's soccer program.
Softball--Mark Voisard accepted the head coaching post at Samford ... Merchant Marine chose Nicci Hays as head softball coach, head women's basketball coach and assistant athletics recruiting coordinator. For the past three years, Hays has coached in the under-12 and under-16 age groups for the Hannibal Gold of the Missouri State Amateur Softball Association ... Men's and women's tennis--Gary Victor elevated to director of tennis at Cal State Northridge. Victor, who has been head women's coach at the school since August 1997, will become head men's coach. The school plans to field a men's tennis squad in fall 1999.
Men's track and field--Chad Fickbohm hired as men's and women's track and field coach at Buffalo State. Most recently, Fickbohm served as head cross country and assistant track and field coach at St. Cloud State.
Men's track and field assistants--Purdue added Lissa Olson and David Kaiser as assistants for men's track and field. Olson was associate head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at Washington State. Kaiser served as co-head women's track and field coach and administrative assistant for men's and women's track and field at Clemson.
Men's and women's volleyball--Sean Byron appointed head men's and women's coach at East Stroudsburg, succeeding Santiago Restrepo, who became assistant women's volleyball coach at Saint Louis. Bryon has spent four years coaching men's and women's volleyball at Springfield, including the last two as head men's coach ... Wayne Lem chosen as head women's coach at Regis. Lem formerly served as head coach at Boston College and Harvard ... Tina Phillips, assistant director of athletics and recreation and head softball coach at Russell Sage for the past three years, accepted additional duties as head women's volleyball coach.
Men's and women's volleyball assistant--Jeff Willems hired as an assistant at Lakeland. Willems has been a coach at the high-school level.
Wrestling--Lakeland chose Noel Peterson as head coach.
STAFF
Academic services--Morgan State named Demetrius Allen as assistant academic coordinator. Allen has been a professional football player with the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League and the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
Athletic trainer--Diane Turgeon hired as an athletic trainer at Morgan State. Most recently, Turgeon was an athletic trainer at St. Margaret's Hospital in Peru, Illinois, and Illinois Valley Community College.
Development--Georgia State selected Mina Yi as director of development. Yi most recently was a development officer for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia.
Marketing--Colleen Becker resigned as marketing director at Stetson to accept a position as director of special events in the president's office at the school.
Publications--Mike Sheridan appointed director of publications at Villanova.
Sports information--Russell Sage awarded tennis coach Jeffrey Bloomberg additional responsibilities as sports information director.
Sports information assistants--Wichita State hired John Barker Jr. as an assistant sports information director. Most recently, Barker has been with the sports information office at Southern Colorado ... Northern Illinois hired Bob Regan as assistant sports information director, replacing Joanne Hoey. Regan has been with the DeKalb Daily Chronicle for six years, most recently serving as sports editor.
CONFERENCES
Noreen Morris elevated to assistant commissioner at Conference USA. Morris has been director of legislative services since September 1996.
AGREEMENTS
Host Communications, Inc., announced new agreements with the Builders Square Alamo Bowl, CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl and Toyota Gator Bowl through 2001. According to the new agreement, Host has the exclusive radio and publishing rights to the Builders Square Alamo Bowl, radio rights for the CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl and publishing rights for the Toyota Gator Bowl. The Alamo Bowl will be played December 29 in San Antonio, and the Citrus and Gator Bowls will be played on January 1, 1999, in Orlando and Jacksonville, Florida, respectively.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America will present the ninth annual Men's Soccer Symposium on December 12 in conjunction with the Division I Men's Soccer Championship in Richmond, Virginia. Featured clinicians include Steve Sampson, former U. S. National Team head coach, Bob Bradley, head coach of Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire, and Jeff Tipping, NSCAA director of coaching and head coach at Muhlenberg. The NSCAA also will present the fifth annual Women's Soccer Symposium on December 5 in conjunction with the Division I Women's Soccer Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. NOTABLES
Oklahoma State's Charles Howell and Texas Christian's Angela Stanford were recognized as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for September. Howell, a sophomore, captured individual medalist honors at the Ping/Golfweek Preview and Stanford, a junior, won the UNM Dick McGuire Invitational.
The following 12 football players were announced as semifinalists for the 29th Annual Rotary Lombardi Award: Anthony Cesario, Colorado State; Ed Chester, Florida; Jared DeVries, Iowa; Kris Ferris, UCLA; Aaron Gibson, Wisconsin; Jon Jansen, Michigan; Andy Katzenmoyer, Ohio State; Jevon Kearse, Florida; Dat Nguyen, Texas A&M; Montae Reagor, Texas Tech; Grey Ruegamer, Arizona State; and Matt Stinchcomb, Georgia. The Lombardi award is presented annually to college football's top lineman.
Former Montana football coach Don Read and former Montana athletics director Harley Lewis were inducted into the school's sports hall of fame. Read, the school's winningest coach, lead the football team to its only national championship in 1995. Lewis worked as director of athletics at the school from 1975 to 1989.
Dave Hart Sr. was named winner of the Homer Rice Award, presented by the NCAA Division I Athletic Directors Association to an individual who has given significant and meaningful contributions to intercollegiate athletics. Hart was an assistant football coach at Kentucky and Navy and head football coach at Pittsburgh before becoming an athletics administrator, most recently serving as commissioner of the Southern Conference from 1986 to 1991.
Sharon E. Taylor, director of athletics at Lock Haven, was named National Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. Taylor, who has been athletics director at Lock Haven since 1987, served as field hockey coach at the school from 1973 to 1995, collecting six national championships and building a record of 331-96-27. Taylor also has been president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and vice president for Division III of the AIAW.
DEATHS
Milton C. Mecham, former head football coach, former dean of men and former dean of admissions at Weber State, died September 23 in Ogden, Utah. Mecham was 82.
Former Delaware football player Robert H. Papy died recently. He was 77. Papy played at Delaware in the 1940s as a tackle and kicker.
Leon R. Dombrowski Sr., former football player at Delaware, died of a heart attack September 5. He was 60. Dombrowski earned all-America honors as a lineman in 1959.
Former Troy State men's basketball coach John Archer died October 13. Archer, who coached at the school from 1956-73, is the school's winningest men's basketball coach with a mark of 304-175-0. He led squads to three NAIA national tournament appearances and three Alabama Collegiate Conference titles.
Colorado cross country and track and field runner Christopher L. Severy died after apparently loosing control of his bicycle and running head first into a tree. Severy, 22, was a fifth-year senior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology who recently was honored as one of the school's top 10 student-athletes. A 1998 Rhodes Scholar finalist, Severy earned all-America honors in 1996 and helped Colorado capture the 1995 Big Eight Conference and 1996 Big 12 Conference cross country titles, in addition to competing in the 1994, 1995 and 1996 NCAA championships.
Creighton athletics department team physician Lee C. Bevilacqua, died October 18 in Nashville, Tennessee, after suffering cardiac arrest while standing on the sidelines of a men's soccer game. Bevilacqua was 71. A member of the Creighton University Athletic Hall of Fame, he had been volunteering as team physician for 32 years (1962-82 and 1986-98). Bevilacqua also had worked on the Creighton Medical School admissions committee during 1979-82 and 1986-89.
Brian Babcock, former gymnast at Southern Illinois-Carbondale, died October 18 from complications following a bone marrow transplant. He was 38. Babcock, a member of the Southern Illinois Athletic Hall of Fame, earned a bronze medal in all-around competition and horizontal bar during the 1983 NCAA championships, in addition to tying for a silver on the parallel bars. In 1985, he won five gold medals and two bronze medals at the National Sports Festival, currently the U.S. Olympic Festival. Since 1996, Babcock had been working toward creating the Texas Sports Ranch, in Baytown, Texas, with a former college teammate.
