Sports sponsorship: American University will add four sports -- men's and women's indoor track, and men's and women's outdoor track and field -- beginning with the 1999-2000 season. Matt Centrowitz, current men's and women's cross country coach at American, will head the new programs. The additions raise the number of sports offered at American to 19 ... Providence College unveiled a four-year plan designed to achieve voluntary compliance with the gender-equity requirements of Title IX. The college will discontinue sponsorship of baseball, men's golf and men's tennis at the end of the academic year. The plan calls for a redistribution of scholarships currently allocated to the three teams to strengthen scholarship opportunities and enhance other areas for teams including women's soccer, softball, women's ice hockey and field hockey. The action brings Providence's sports offerings to 19, including eight men's and 11 women's sports.
Agreement: The Atlantic Coast Conference has named Gear for Sports as its official merchandise concessionaire. The three-year deal gives Gear exclusive on-site merchandise rights at both the ACC men's and women's basketball tournaments.
Milestones: Clive Charles, University of Portland, 300 wins in men's and women's soccer. Charles is 158-64-23 in men's soccer while his women's teams have compiled a record of 142-30-8 ... Sally Starr, Boston University, 200 wins in field hockey ... Sam Carrington, St. Francis College (New York), 100 wins in men's soccer ... Jerry Moore, Appalachian State University, 100 wins in football.
