Brunk named Northeast-10 commissioner

The Northeast-10 Conference has appointed Dave Brunk as commissioner. Brunk has been a membership services representative at the NCAA national office since 1990.

Brunk joined the Association from Morehead State, where he served in various capacities, including assistant director of athletics from September 1985 to November 1990. He also was head softball coach at the school in addition to working as director of the school's Eagle Athletic Fund from January to September 1985.

Prior to his stint at Morehead State, Brunk was owner of the Watertown Pirates baseball club from 1983 to 1986. He also fulfilled general manager duties with the Fort Myers Royals of the Florida State League, Jacksonville Suns of the Southern League and Waterloo Royals of the Midwest League.

Brunk has worked with the executive and peer selection subcommittees of the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification, and he also has served on the summer baseball subcommittee of the Professional Sports Liaison Committee and Association of College and University Auditors.

Brunk earned a bachelor's degree in history/business administration at Ball State in 1972 and a master's in sport science/sport management at the United States Sports Academy in 1988.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Russ Northrup, instructor of marketing, succeeds Virgil Albertini, professor of English, as faculty athletics representative at Northwest Missouri State. Albertini, who was faculty athletics representative for 17 years, recently retired after a 34-year teaching career at the school.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jeannie King, Queens (North Carolina) head women's basketball coach, accepted expanded responsibilities as interim athletics director ... Metropolitan State director of athletics Bill Helman announced plans to retire, effective November 1, 1998. Helman has been with the school for 21 years, including 17 as athletics director.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bobby Gleason promoted to senior associate athletics director at Texas Tech ... Brenda Carter elevated to associate athletics director at Georgia Southern. Carter has been senior woman administrator at the school since 1993.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Texas Tech promoted Russell Warren to assistant athletics director for ticket operations and Byron Waters to assistant athletics director for marketing ... Matt Shanklin elevated to assistant athletics director for marketing and licensing at Arkansas. For the past eight years, Shanklin has been director of marketing at the school ... Georgia Southern promoted Mike Brass to assistant athletics director for athletics performance and Tom McClellan to assistant athletics director for media relations. Since July 1997, Brass has served as head strength and conditioning coach. McClellan has been athletics media relations director since September 1996 ... Seton Hall elevated Marie Wozniak to assistant athletics director/sports communications, replacing John Wooding, who accepted a similar post at Rutgers. Wozniak, who has been with the school for seven years, most recently served as associate sports information director ... Buffalo selected Sandra Hollander, athletic trainer and equipment manager at the school for the past 14 years, as assistant athletics director. Hollander also has been head softball coach for 11 seasons ... New Mexico State chose Heath Nielsen as assistant athletics director for media relations, succeeding Steve Shutt. For the past four years, Nielsen has been assistant director of athletics media relations at Mississippi State.

Emerson selected Kristin Parnell, second-year head women's soccer coach at the school, as senior woman administrator.

COACHES

Baseball--Muhlenberg appointed Bob Macaluso as head coach. Macaluso, an assistant at Springfield for the past two seasons, succeeds Jon McLaughlin, who remains at the school as offensive coordinator for the football team.

Baseball assistants--Lamar added Emerick Jagneaux as an assistant, replacing Brian Biggers. Jagneaux most recently coached at Notre Dame Academy in Crowley, Louisiana ... Chad Donsbach hired as an assistant at Franklin. Donsbach was an assistant at Rockford ... Emerson appointed recent Franklin Pierce graduate James Smith as assistant coach ... Florida Atlantic promoted assistant coach John McCormack to associate head coach ... Southern Mississippi added Lane Burroughs as an assistant to replace Scott Dwyer.

Men's basketball--Bart Lundy selected as head coach at Queens (North Carolina) ... Trinity (Texas) chose Ken Burmeister as head coach for the 1998-99 season. Burmeister most recently served as head coach at Loyola (Illinois) from 1994-97 ... Joe Cambron named head coach at LaGrange. Cambron is a former assistant at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Men's basketball assistants--Wentworth Institute assistants Jeff Corrigan and Sean Foster resigned ... Walt Corbean added as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky. Corbean was an assistant at Army for three seasons ... Quinnipiac chose Steve Baker as an assistant coach. Baker served as an assistant at New York University from 1996-98 ... Women's basketball assistants--Georgetown added Natasha Barnes as an assistant. Barnes has been assistant director of the athletics association at South Florida since 1994 ... Wellesley named Jeffrey Swirka as an assistant coach for the 1998-99 season. During the 1997-98 year, Swirka was a girls' basketball assistant at Milton Academy ... St. Francis (New York) added Brenda Milano as an assistant. Milano has coached at Seton Hall and Northeastern ... Amanda Whitney named as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic, succeeding Tara Johnson ... Janel Hollar hired as an assistant at Albany. Field hockey assistants--Julia Russell named field hockey and lacrosse assistant at Wellesley. Russell served as interim lacrosse coach at the school in 1998 ... Rachel Steinbrook hired as assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Haverford.

Men's and women's golf--John Hill named head coach at Heidelberg. Hill will retain his duties as athletics director and head men's basketball coach at the school ... Nancy Lewis chosen as director of golf at San Jose State, where she will be responsible for directing the men's and women's programs. Most recently, Lewis has been manager and Ladies Professional Golf Associa-tion teaching professional at Saddle Creek Golf Club in Copperopolis, California.

Men's lacrosse--Keuka appointed William E. Bjorness as head coach. From 1993-98, Bjorness served as an assistant at Dartmouth.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Tim Shea chosen as assistant coach at Georgetown. Shea was formerly an assistant at Notre Dame from 1993-96.

Women's rowing--Louisville appointed Julio Viyella head coach. The squad is scheduled to begin competition in 1999-2000. Last year, Viyella served as an assistant women's coach at Tennessee.

Women's rowing assistant--Notre Dame selected Kerry O'Keefe as an assistant coach. Last year, O'Keefe was an assistant at Ohio State.

Women's soccer assistants--Wellesley hired Sarah Moon as an assistant. Since March 1997, Moon has guided the Bandits U-15 Girls Soccer Club ... Albany selected Brad Utter as an assistant. Utter was head girls' soccer coach at Cambridge Academy last year ... Haverford named Brooke Fritz assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach.

Softball--Amy Croll, a 1997 Moravian graduate, hired as the pitching coach at the school ... Kathryn Kroupa selected as head coach at Franklin & Marshall. Kroupa has been head softball coach at Rosemont for two seasons and is head women's soccer coach at Immaculata.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Keene State named Charles Batterman as part-time men's and women's diving coach. Batterman spent seven years as head men's diving coach at Harvard and 28 seasons as head swimming and diving coach at MIT before retiring in 1980 ... Molly Kuhlman added as a graduate assistant at Akron. Kuhlman has been an assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Colgate for the past two years.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants--Mark Murray selected as an assistant at Maryland. Murray has been head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Salem Teikyo since 1994 ... Misericordia elevated Heather Dougherty as assistant coach after she had spent one year as a student assistant at the school ... Meredith Cox named assistant coach at Wellesley. Cox was assistant men's swimming coach at Framingham (Massachusetts) High School during the 1997-98 season ... North Carolina State announced the selection of Allison Lloyd as an assistant coach. Lloyd has been head coach of the High Point Swim Club, Inc., for the past four years ... Allan Kopel appointed assistant swimming coach and assistant aquatics director at Florida Atlantic.

Men's and women's tennis--Southwestern Louisiana chose Brett Schwartz as head coach. Schwartz had been an assistant men's tennis coach at LSU ... Eric Steidlmayer appointed as head men's coach at UC San Diego. For the past two seasons, Steidlmayer has been an assistant tennis coach at UC Davis ... Cal Poly Pomona named Sandy Kriezel interim men's and women's coach for the 1998-99 season. For the past three years, Kriezel has been an assistant women's tennis coach at the school.

Men's and women's tennis assistant--Ivan Baron selected as head women's coach at Florida Atlantic.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Albany chose Jennifer Petersen as a graduate assistant. Last spring, Petersen coached with the Johnstown (New York) High School girls' and boys' track program.

Women's volleyball--Manhattanville hired Ann Bonner as head coach ... Vicki Lawrence named head coach at Emerson.

Women's volleyball assistants--Monica Starr and Amy Taylor added as assistants at Haverford. Taylor also serves as head women's basketball coach at the school.

STAFF

Athletic training assistants--Jeanna Cornetti selected as an assistant athletic trainer and Stephen Brendese selected as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Albany. Cornetti spent last year interning with the Albany athletic training staff and Brendese interned as an athletic trainer at Siena in 1997-98 ... Florida Atlantic hired Heather Niemas as assistant athletic trainer. Niemas is a 1998 graduate of Old Dominion.

Event management--Saint Louis hired Heidi Rueschhoff as a member of the event management and promotions staff, succeeding Chris Greenwell.

External relations--Tom Harvey named director of external relations for football at Florida Atlantic. Since 1993, Harvey has worked at Miami (Florida), most recently serving as director of regional athletics development from 1995-98.

Marketing/promotions--Maryland selected Katrina Scott as assistant director for sports marketing. Most recently, Scott worked as a marketing assistant at Florida State ... Metro State hired Larry McGill as coordinator of marketing and promotions. McGill has been with the school in various capacities since 1969.

Sports information--Jack Duggan appointed director of sports information at Nicholls State, succeeding Ron Mears, who resigned. Duggan has been assistant sports information director at the school since January 1995.

Sports information assistants--Shawn Whiteley selected as an assistant sports information director for women's sports at Troy State. Whiteley has been assistant sports information director at Davidson ... Texas-San Antonio chose Craig Merriman as assistant sports information director, succeeding Jared Newland. Merriman was a member of the sports information staff at Southwest Texas State.

Sports marketing--Akron hired Melvin Lenzy as sports marketing coordinator. Lenzy most recently was director of basketball operations for the Women's National Basketball Association's Portland Power.

Strength and conditioning assistant--Kirk Davis named assistant strength and conditioning coach. Davis has been a student assistant at the school for the past two years.

Ticket assistant--Albany named Jennifer Chiera graduate assistant for tickets and promotions.

AGREEMENT

The Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classic announced a four-year agreement that pits the Big 12 Conference's first team after the Bowl Championship series selection process is finished against an Southeastern Conference division champion, division runner-up, team with a comparable record or a team mutually agreed upon between the two conferences.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-American Conference appointed Becky Olsen as assistant director of communications. Olsen was sports information/marketing director at Lake Superior State.

ASSOCIATIONS

Team Effort hired David L. Stroham as vice president of sales and marketing. Stroham was midwest regional sales representative for New Hermes, Inc. Team Effort designs licensed Nike, collegiate, Professional Golf Association Tour and custom golf accessories.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Enforcement representative Karl Hicks resigned to become assistant commissioner for compliance for the Southeastern Conference ... Heather Yost and Scott Deitch chosen as publications editors. Yost is a recent graduate of Ball State, where she was a sports correspondent with the university daily paper and won Sportswriter of the Year in 1996 for the Ball State Daily News. Deitch has been director of sports information at Western Maryland since 1987.

NOTABLES

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators named the following as District Administrators of the Year: Arlene E. Gorton, Brown, retired; Sharon E. Taylor, Lock Haven; Donna Ledwin, New Rochelle; Karen Miller, Cal Poly Pomona; Jean Lenti Ponsetto, DePaul; Barbara Schroeder, Regis (Colorado); Tricia Bork, NCAA vice-president for championships. Winners are selected based on length of service and outstanding achievement in and contribution to women's athletics.

The organization also named Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women's Sports Foundation, as the 1998 Honor Award winner. Lopiano has coached college men's and women's volleyball and women's basketball and softball. She is a member of the National Sports Hall of Fame, National Softball Hall of Fame and the Texas Women's Hall of Fame. The NACWAA Honor Award recognizes an individual's outstanding support for women's sports and women athletes.

NACWAA also will honor eight individuals for their outstanding contributions to the promotion of intercollegiate sports for women with the creation of the annual Lifetime Achievement Award. The 1998 honorees are Phyllis T. Bailey, Ohio State, retired; Carol E. Gordon, Washington State, retired; Judith R. Holland, UCLA; Leotus Morrison, James Madison, retired; Martha Mullins, Eastern Kentucky, retired; Mary A. Rice, Rowan (Glassboro State College), retired; Jeanne Rowlands, Northeastern, retired; and Charlotte West, Southern Illinois, retired.

Texas Woman's head softball coach Dianne Baker will be inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame December 4. Baker has been head coach at Texas Woman's since the program's reinstatement two years ago. Before that, Baker coached 15 years at Stephen F. Austin, where her team captured the 1986 NCAA Division II National Championship. Baker, a member of the Texas Woman's Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, has built a career mark of 549-328-1.

Tom O'Connor, athletics director at George Mason since November 1994, will be inducted into the Assumption College Athletic Hall of Fame on October 2. O'Connor, a 1968 graduate of Assumption, was a four-year member of the men's basketball team and ended his collegiate career as the school's third all-time leading scorer with 1,121 points. He currently is ranked 25th on the scoring list.

Bo Schembechler, former Miami (Ohio) and Michigan head football coach, named winner of the 1999 Amos Alonzo Stagg Award presented by the American Football Coaches Association to "those whose services have been outstanding in the advancement of the best interests of football." He coached six seasons at Miami (Ohio) before moving to Michigan, where he compiled a 194-48-5 record in 20 years, to become the school's most victorious football coach. Schembechler retired in 1989 with a career mark of 234-65-8.


DEATHS

Busarind "Boo" Rogers, one of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's top track and field athletes in the 1990s, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound September 22. She was 29. Rogers, who competed at Pittsburg State, captured the 1991 NCAA Division II outdoor heptathlon championship and earned all-America honors in the indoor long jump. She also set the MIAA outdoor championship long-jump record in 1991 at 20 feet, 3.75 inches.

Frederick Alderman, a 100- and 220-yard dash champion in 1927 at Michigan State, died recently in Social Circle, Georgia. Alderman was the oldest track and field Olympic gold medialist in the United States.
