Association wide -- Officiating clinics available via video conference
For the 13th year, regional basketball officiating clinics administered by the NCAA will be conducted during weekends throughout the fall.
Division I head coaches will be allowed to fulfill their attendance requirement by viewing a live video conference October 21. If a school's head coach does not view the live video conference, a member of the school's full-time basketball coaching staff must attend one of the regional clinics.
The women's video conference will be conducted from 9-11 a.m. (Central time). The men's video conference will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Central time). The clinics can be downlinked from a satellite dish using the following coordinates: C Band -- GE2, Transponder 3, 85 degrees west, downlink frequency 3760 MHz -- vertical (Note: GE 2 may be listed as W2 on some satellite charts/grid listings).
The video conference also is available (but not mandatory) for Divisions II and III head coaches, members of the media and sports information directors. Viewers may ask questions of the clinicians by dialing 913/981-5510 (women's reference 517117, men's reference 517124). To receive assistance if experiencing a problem with transmission of the conference, viewers may call 816/753-0020.
The women's clinics and video conference will be conducted by Marcy Weston, national coordinator of women's basketball officiating, and Barbara Jacobs, secretary-rules editor of the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee.
Conducting the men's clinics and video conference will be Henry O. Nichols, national coordinator of men's basketball officiating, and Edward Bilik, secretary-rules editor of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee.
All Division I supervisors of officials and officials are required to attend one of the 1998 clinics.
Video cassettes available
Basketball officiating video cassettes are available from the NCAA in preparation for this season.
Instructional videotapes for both the men's and the women's game can be ordered by using the accompanying form. The instructional tapes are available in VHS format for $15 each.
The 1998-99 women's instructional video demonstrates coach and bench decorum, sporting behavior, rough play away from the ball, post play, hand-checking and "approval of score with no time on the game clock and the buzzer has sounded to end the game." This season's men's instructional video demonstrates rough play away from the ball, palming the ball and coaching-box restrictions.
Videotapes of one of the men's and one of the women's regional officiating clinics can be purchased for $20 after November 16.
Copies of instructional video cassettes from previous years and from past clinics also can be purchased by using the accompanying form.
Purchase Order Form at NCAA OFFICIATING VIDEOCASSETTES, P.O. Box 7347, Overland Park, Kansas 66207-0347, Telephone 913/339-1900.
