Akron selects Helsel as athletics director

Akron has named Dennis E. Helsel director of athletics, succeeding Michael A. Bobinski, who became athletics director at Xavier.

Helsel, associate athletics director at Syracuse since July 1996, was assistant athletics director at the school for eight years before being promoted. During his tenure, Helsel's responsibilities encompassed game-day operations and scheduling for football and men's basketball, day-to-day financial issues of the athletics department, sports camp programs and assisting in leading various local charity fund-raising committees on behalf of the university. He has served on several NCAA and Big East Conference committees.

Before joining Syracuse, Helsel served as assistant athletics director at Old Dominion from 1983 to 1988. Additionally, Helsel spent two years as athletics event manager and one season as head softball coach at Penn State. He also coached at Army in the 1970s.

Helsel is a 1969 graduate of Army, where he earned a degree in engineering sciences. He also has two master's degrees from Penn State, one in sports administration and one in mathematics.

SEMINAR

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics announced its annual Facilities, Fund-Raising and Marketing Workshop November 1-3 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida. The workshop will feature 12-15 presentations focusing on new or renovated facilities and other topics pertaining to athletics facilities in the 1990s and beyond. Jennifer Heppel, membership services representative, resigned to become director of legislative and eligibility services at the Big Ten Conference.

CORRECTIONS

The school at which Bill Richter was hired was omitted and the number of years he held his immediately previous position was incorrectly listed in the The Record section of the August 17 issue of The NCAA News. Richter accepted the position of director of marketing and promotions at Pennsylvania after serving as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions and executive director of Drexel Athletic Club at Drexel for three years.

The position which Linda Ohrin accepted at Towson was listed incorrectly in The Record section of the August 17 issue of The NCAA News. Ohrin was hired as head women's lacrosse coach.

Navy head women's track coach Carla Criste selected as head women's track coach of the United States Pan American team. The team will compete in Winnipeg, Canada, in August 1999.

Paul Goldstein of Stanford and Michelle Magid of Boston U. named Division I recipients of the Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The award, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, is presented to the individual who has demonstrated leadership, sportsmanship and scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
