Champions head all-academic track and field teams
Five of the top 10 Division II women's teams and three of the top 10 Division III women's teams at the 1998 NCAA Divisions II and III outdoor track and field championships lead the all-academic outdoor track and field teams announced by the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA).
South Dakota, fifth at the 1998 Division II women's championships, and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, third at the Division III event, are among 32 women's and 11 men's teams garnering honors.
Individually, 126 women and 73 men attained academic honors, including Division II women's individual-event champions Janet Eck of Fort Hays State (high jump), Becky Ball of Ashland (shot put) and Kim Schiemenz of Northern Colorado (heptathlon); Division II men's shot-put champion Jason Stuke of Emporia State; and Division III women's champions Maria Meginin of Hartwick (high jump), Patti Franckowiak of Wisconsin-La Crosse (discus throw) and Colorado College's Heather O'Brien (heptathlon).
Joining South Dakota among the Division II women's honorees are North Dakota State and Nebraska-Omaha, which finished eighth and ninth at the championships, respectively. Emporia State and Fort Hays State, which tied for 10th, also were honored.
In Division III, Wisconsin-Oshkosh was joined by Wisconsin-La Crosse and Concordia-Moorhead, which placed fourth and 10th, respectively, at the 1998 championships.
North Dakota's men's team (3.270) and Wayne State's (Nebraska) women's team (3.460) posted the highest grade-point average (GPA) among Division II honorees, while Carnegie Mellon (3.380) and Emory (3.470) registered the top GPA among Division III men's and women's teams, respectively.
Missouri's women's team (3.266) was the only Division I team to be honored.
