RASING THE ROOFThe NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee recently recommended sites for the 2003 through 2007 Final Fours: 2003, April 5 and 7, New Orleans; 2004, April 3 and 5, San Antonio; 2005, April 2 and 4, St. Louis, 2006, April 1 and 3, Indianapolis, 2007, March 31 and April 2, Atlanta. Other future sites include St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1999; Indianapolis in 2000; Minneapolis in 2001; and Atlanta in 2002. All of the future sites feature domed facilities that seat more than 40,000. The table above shows final-game attendance since official records began being kept in 1969. All championship-game attendance exceeding 30,000 has been in a domed stadium. The most recent final not conducted in a domed facility was in 1996 when Kentucky defeated Syracuse at what is now Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
FOOTBALLCabinet proposes collective approach on bracket expansion The NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee is recommending that a 12th regular-season Division I-A football game be permitted in years in which there are 14 playing dates from the first permissible playing date through the last playing date in November. DIVISION ICabinet proposes collective approach on bracket expansion The NCAA Division I Business/Finance Cabinet has identified about $300,000 in funding for Division I bracket expansion, but it also has asked the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet to provide additional funds -- at least another $300,000 -- through a review of its championships policies and practices. The $300,000 identified by the Business/Finance Cabinet identified would accomplish only a fraction of the bracket expansion that has been recommended (the estimated total cost would be $850,000). If the Championships/Cabinet identified $300,000 in savings through changing practices, that still would leave a $250,000 shortfall for accomplishing all of the proposed changes. At that point, under the Business/Finance Cabinet proposal, the Championships/Competition Cabinet either could adopt additional changes totaling $250,000 or it could prioritize the requests and fund the ones most in need of expansion. The Championships/Competition Cabinet will meet July 7-10. The Business/Finance Cabinet also recommending that the registration fee for the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse be increased from $18 to $25, effective with the 1999-2000 academic year.
