Academic excellence highlights GTE spring at-large teams
Forty-one student-athletes with perfect cumulative grade-point averages highlight the GTE Academic All-America spring men's and women's at-large teams.
Of the 41 honorees, 20 are first-team selections, including Virginia Tech's Katie Ollendick, a track performer who was named the women's GTE Academic All-America Team Member of the Year in the university division. Ollendick is a senior psychology/exercise science major.
The men's team member of the year in the university division is Michi-
gan distance runner Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan, a senior civil and environmental engineering major, is the NCAA champion in the indoor mile and the Big Ten Conference record-holder in the 3,000 meters.
In the college division, the men's and women's team members of the year are Rose-Hulman's Ryan Loftus, the NCAA Division III indoor pole vault champion and a senior chemical engineering major, and Rebecca Tucker, a lacrosse player from Brockport State. Tucker is a senior psychology and physical education major.
The GTE Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. Nominees must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale).
