Division I cabinet member Magee dies

Sadie E. Magee, a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, died May 31 after a lengthy illness. Magee served as assistant athletics director and coordinator of women's sports at Jackson State.

Magee came to Jackson State in 1975 as the head women's basketball coach. In 14 seasons, she built a 271-154 career record to become the most-victorious coach in the history of the school's women's basketball program. Magee led her teams to three Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and two appearances in the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. Her squads also won three straight National Association of Women's Sports National Championships from 1978 through 1980. During her tenure, Magee crafted seven seasons of 20 or more wins and two seasons with at least 30 victories.

Magee also found success as head girls' basketball coach at Lanier (Mississippi) High School from 1954-67, where she guided several squads to conference championships.

A 1954 graduate of Alcorn State, Magee was inducted into the school's sports hall of fame in 1989. In 1994, the Southwestern Athletic Conference named its women's all-sports trophy the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award, honoring Magee and Prairie View track and field coach Barbara Jacket.

Lehigh selected Gregory C. Farrington as president, effective August 15. Farrington has been dean of the school of engineering and applied science at Pennsylvania ... Dale T. Knobel, provost and dean of the faculty at Southwestern (Texas) named president at Denison ... Grinnell appointed Russell K. Osgood president, effective August 1. Osgood has been dean and professor of law at the Cornell school of law.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Southern Colorado announced the selection of Greg Sinn as interim athletics director. Sinn, who replaces Tony Taibi, serves as executive director of university relations, a position he has held since 1997 ... Hilbert chose Richard Walsh as athletics director ... Ron Coleman released as athletics director at Lincoln (Missouri) ... Mississippi named John Shafer director of athletics ... Michael Sumpter accepted the position of athletics director at Nebraska-Kearney ... Occidental promoted James Kerman to athletics director, succeeding Dale Widolff, who will continue as the head football coach at the school. Kerman was assistant director of athletics for six years ... Cal Tech athletics director Dan Bridges resigned to assume the same position at Pomona-Pitzer. Bridges is the current chair of the Division III Championships Committee.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Rick Dreiling appointed associate athletics director for external affairs at Wichita State, replacing Casey Scott, who resigned to become assistant athletics director at Colorado State. For the past nine years, Dreiling served as athletics director at Butler County (Kansas) Community College ... St. Lawrence named Randolph W. LaBrake associate director of athletics for business affairs and Michael Howard associate director of athletics for athletics and recreational programming. LaBrake has been with St. Lawrence since 1983, serving the last six years as athletics business manager. Howard will retain responsibilities as head men's and women's cross country and track coach ... North Carolina-Charlotte hired Tim Fitzpatrick as executive director of the Athletic Foundation/associate athletics director. Most recently, Fitzpatrick served as associate athletics director for marketing and development at Pittsburgh.

COACHES

Baseball--Mercyhurst hired Scott Norwood as head coach to succeed Dan De Caprio, who resigned. Norwood has been head assistant coach at Indianapolis for four years ... Paul Pearl promoted to head coach at Holy Cross. Pearl, who also works as head ice hockey coach at the school, was an assistant with the baseball program for three seasons ... Matthew M. Reed accepted the position of head coach at Bridgeport ... Tennessee-Martin appointed Victor "Bubba" Cates head coach. In nine years as head coach at Jackson State Community College, Cates built a 255-161 record and replaces 22-year head coach Vernon Prather.

Men's basketball--Youngstown State awarded head coach Dan Peters a three-year contract extension ... The contract of Michael Bernard, six-year head coach at Norfolk State, will not be renewed. Bernard finishes with an 141-67 mark.

Men's basketball assistants--Elon chose Joel Haskins as an assistant coach ... Bill Lange accepted the assistant coaching position at La Salle ... Illinois State announced Alvin Williamson as assistant coach. Williamson has been an assistant coach at Washington State and replaces King Rice ... Desmond Oliver named assistant coach at Cornell. Oliver was an assistant at Texas A&M in 1997-98 ... Mike Kruszynski hired as assistant coach at San Jose State. Kruszynski has been head coach at Independence (Kansas) Community College since 1991 ... Steve DeMeo, King Rice, Bob Walsh and Vince Cautero named assistant coaches at Providence. DeMeo was an assistant at Iona for three seasons and Rice moved from Illinois State, where he had served as an assistant coach since 1993. Walsh most recently was a restricted coach at San Diego and Cautero, who will fulfill graduate assistant duties, is a former Florida International assistant ... Women's basketball--Charleata Beale selected as head women's basketball coach and volleyball coach at Goucher. For the past two years, Beale was an assistant basketball and volleyball coach at Washington and Lee ... Tony Barone stepped down as head women's basketball coach after 19 seasons at Southern Connecticut State. Barone, who will remain with the school as a member of the exercise science faculty, compiled a 255-267 record during his tenure ... Western Carolina assistant coach Jill Dunn appointed interim head coach for the upcoming season. Dunn succeeds Maria Fantanarosa who was named head women's basketball coach at Miami (Ohio) ... Kara Rehbaum resigned as head coach at Canisius. Rehbaum has been head coach for five years and earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1995 ... Misericordia head coach Julie Oja resigned. Oja, who also served as head volleyball coach and coordinator of athletics facilities, plans to continue her education at Allegheny this fall.

Women's basketball assistants--Stacy Alexander accepted the position of assistant basketball coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) ... St. Lawrence promoted G. P. Gromacki to head women's coach, succeeding Fran Grembowicz, who will serve as head women's field hockey coach. Gromacki had been the associate women's basketball coach ... Tracie Morris named assistant coach at San Jose State. Morris spent last season as an assistant coach with the San Jose Lasers of the American Basketball League ... Long Beach State promoted assistant coach Rosa Stokes to associate head coach ... Wagner hired Christine Lardon as assistant coach.

Men's and women cross country-- Tom Henderson resigned as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at South Dakota State. Henderson has been head coach for two seasons.

Football assistants--Benedictine (Illinois) added Jeff Hand as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. Hand most recently served as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Hanover ... Millikin announced the selection of Jay Hood as defensive secondary coach ... Allen Edwards appointed assistant defensive line coach at Furman ... Iona hired Mark Vass as quarterbacks coach ... Henry Sroka chosen as assistant coach and intramural coordinator at Redlands. Sroka, who replaces Keith Gissel, comes from New Mexico State where he has held several positions with the football program including running backs coach, director of player development, and strength and conditioning coach ... Chicago selected Mike Harkins and T. J. Rogness as assistant coaches. During the 1997 season, Harkins was offensive line coach at Johns Hopkins and Rogness served as secondary coach at St. Cloud State.

Men's golf--North Carolina appointed John Inman head golf coach, effective July 1. Inman played golf professionally on the PGA Tour from 1985-95 and currently provides audio updates on PGA events through the PGA Tour Internet home page.

Women's golf--Austin Peay, which announced plans to establish a women's golf program effective in the fall of 1998, named Mark Leroux head women's coach. Leroux also is men's golf coach at the school.

Gymnastics--Wisconsin-Stout hired Jeff Richards as head coach. Richards has served as assistant coach at Southern Utah for nine years.

Men's ice hockey--New Hampshire's John Nanof promoted to associate head coach. Nanof has been an assistant with the program for the past five years.

Women's ice hockey--Fred Quistgard appointed head women's ice hockey coach at Union (New York). Quistgard was an interim head coach at Bowdoin for one year. The women's ice hockey program is scheduled to be upgraded to varsity status in 1999-2000.

Men's soccer assistants--Michael Devaney accepted the position of assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Duke named Dan Cagle assistant coach.

Women's soccer--Deb Biche assumed the head coaching post at St. Lawrence. Biche replaces Cathy Moss, who resigned.

Women's soccer assistants--Kristy Walker accepted the position of assistant coach at Pepperdine ... Hobart and William Smith chose Ann Haggerty as assistant soccer coach and director of the sport and recreation center.

Softball--Brenda Volk named head coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Volk succeeds Irv Madsen, who is retiring after 11 years ... Adrian hired Molly Ziegler as head coach, succeeding Doug McDaniel. McDaniel will continue to serve at the school as building manager for the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center, director of intramurals and assistant women's basketball coach. Ziegler, who served as an assistant softball coach last season, will retain her responsibilities as women's athletics coordina-tor and assistant women's soccer coach ... Gwen Lexow appointed head coach at Bates, effective September 1. Lexow, who succeeds interim coach Geri-Lyn Dubay, has been assistant basketball coach at Wellesley for the past three seasons ... Cyndi Raymond named head coach of the women's softball program at Northern Colorado. The program is scheduled to return to action during the 1999 season after a 15-year absence. Raymond has been head softball coach at Wisconsin-Stout since 1992 and head tennis coach since 1995.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--North Carolina chose Nunzio Esposto as men's and women's diving coach. Esposto succeeds four-year head coach Carl Kupper, who resigned.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant--Jessica Nixon accepted the position of assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Hamilton. Nixon comes from South Carolina, where she was the school's NCAA Woman of the Year in 1997.

Men's and women's tennis--Southwest Texas State women's tennis coach Jody Barsalou resigned ... Colgate selected Bob Dallis as men's and women's tennis coach ... St. Lawrence promoted Matt Smucker to interim men's and women's tennis coach. He served as a graduate assistant coach last season. Smucker succeeds Margie Strait, who was named athletics director at the school ... Eric Rebhuhn chosen as head men's and women's tennis coach at Northern Iowa. Rebhuhn, who was men's and women's graduate assistant coach, replaces Nancy Clark, who resigned.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Candace Roberts added as an assistant throws coach at Syracuse. Roberts comes from Cal State Northridge, where she was an assistant coach for four years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants--South Dakota State announced the appointment of M. Gregg Whitis as its first full-time assistant volleyball coach. Whitis was head coach at Kankakee (Illinois) Community College last season ... Robert Pulliza selected as an assistant women's coach and Lori Dyer promoted to full-time assistant women's coach at Northern Illinois. Pulliza served as assistant coach at James Madison for two seasons and Dyer has been a graduate assistant with the program since August ... Miya Malauulu chosen as women's assistant coach at Montana State.

Wrestling--Steve Laidacker promoted to head wrestling coach at Scranton, succeeding John Hopkins, who resigned to focus on his responsibilities as physical education instructor and head men's and women's cross country coach. Laidacker had been an assistant coach for 17 years.

STAFF

Athletics communication--Ball State named Chris Taylor full-time assistant director of athletics communications, effective July 1. Taylor has been a student assistant and graduate assistant at the school for the past six years.

Development--Daniel S. Gooley appointed director of athletics development at Quinnipiac, effective July 1. Gooley most recently served as director of team services/Major League Baseball at Starter Corporation ... North Carolina-Charlotte executive director of the Athletic Foundation Bob Young chosen as director of major gifts/planned giving for the athletics department at the school.

Athletic trainers--Pedro Arroyo resigned as athletic trainer at Lehman. The school named Miguel Flores as his successor.

Assistant athletic trainers--Bucknell selected Tiffany Lebengood as assistant athletic trainer ... Jim Shorten accepted the position of assistant athletic trainer at Elon.

Facilities--Larry Rutledge announced plans to retire as director of facilities, intramurals and club sports at Coast Guard.

Sports information director--Craig Toth resigned as sports information director at Eckerd after holding the position since September 1996.

Sports information assistant--Saint Louis hired Chuck Yahng as assistant sports information director. Yahng comes from Missouri-St. Louis, where he fulfilled sports information director duties for two years. Yahng succeeds Josh Sutter, who resigned to accept a media relations position at Marquette.

AGREEMENTS

The United States Filter Corporation acquired title sponsorship rights to the Holiday Bowl through 2001 and plans to name it the Culligan Holiday Bowl. One of the largest manufacturers of water and wastewater treatment systems in the world, the United States Filter Corporation acquired Culligan Water Technologies in February of this year. For the past three years, Plymouth sponsored the bowl.

The Missouri athletics department announced a four-year multi-media rights agreement with Learfield Communications, Inc., and ISP Sports to secure corporate sponsorships, deliver sports events, radio broadcasts, and selected television programming.

CONFERENCES

Tom Toohig appointed supervisor of men's basketball officials of the Ohio Athletic Conference. Toohig has been an official in the conference for 25 years. He also is a member of the Cleveland Basketball Officials Hall of Fame and recently was president of the Ohio Association of Basketball Officials.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference named its officers for the 1998-99 academic year: Harold E. Ridley, president at Loyola (Maryland), president; Paul L. Golden, president at Niagara, vice-president; Richard J. Ensor, MAAC commissioner, secretary/treasurer; Daniel P. Starr, athletics director at Canisius, chair of committee on athletics administration.

Conference USA appointed Joseph Steger, president; J. H. Woodward, vice-president; Arthur Riehl, chair of the faculty athletics representatives; Bill Cords, chair of athletics directors; Jean Lenti Ponsetto, chair of senior woman administrators; Steve Logan, chair of football coaches; Pat Kennedy, chair of men's basketball coaches; and Terri Mitchell, chair of women's basketball coaches.

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced the addition of Norwich and Southern Vermont, effective September 1999.

CORRECTION

It was incorrectly reported in a headline for the Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships story in the June 1 issue of The NCAA News that North Central College won the team title with a championships-record score. North Central's points represented a school record. Rowan scored the most points in the championship's history when it compiled 119 in 1982.


NOTABLES

Stanford pitcher Jeff Austin captured Baseball America's college player of the year award. A junior, Austin posted a record of 12-3 with a 3.11 earned-run average and 136 strikeouts in 133 innings.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named the following Divison I men's national award winners: Dick Gould, Stanford, Wilson/ITA national coach of the year; Jeff Kefalos, South Carolina, ITA assistant coach of the year; Pavel Kudmac, Oklahoma State, ITA Farnsworth/senior player of the year; Vladimir Pavicevic, South Carolina, ITA rookie player of the year; Lee Pearson, Auburn, Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award; Thomas Blake, Harvard, John Van Nostrand Award.

Arizona junior Amy Skieresz and Arizona State senior Kellee Booth captured Honda Award honors as the top female collegiate athletes in track and field and golf, respectively. Skieresz, who was the Honda Award winner for track and field and cross country last year, holds NCAA indoor and Pacific-10 Conference championships in the 5,000-meter run and has earned NCAA Track and Field Woman of the Year recognition. Booth closed the season as the third-ranked women's collegiate golfer in the nation and was an NCAA first-team all-America selection in addition to being on the National Golf Coaches Association all-scholar academic team.

Danielle Penner, senior pitcher at California (Pennsylvania) designated as a Honda Award winner as the NCAA Division II Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Penner helped her team to its second straight Division II championship with a 46-4 record and 295 strikeouts on the season. A three-time all-America selection, Penner also was named PSAC player of the year.

Florida's Brad Wilkerson garnered the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 1998 Division I Baseball College Player of the Year award. Wilkerson, a junior pitcher, infielder and outfielder, edged semifinalists Eddy Furniss of LSU and Damon Thames of Rice.

Bryce Molder named winner of the 1998 Jack Nicklaus College Player of the Year award, presented by Rolex and Nicklaus Golf Equipment. The Georgia Tech freshman earned a No. 1 ranking in the final edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.

North Carolina head women's lacrosse coach Jenny Slingluff designated as 1998 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association South Region Coach of the Year. Slingluff guided her team to a regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference championship and a semifinal appearence in the NCAA tournament.

Betsy Mitchell, Pablo Morales, Anthony Nesty, Don Harper and William Prew are among 15 inductees into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Mitchell swam collegiately at Texas and garnered three national titles in the 100-yard backstroke, two titles in the 200-yard backstroke and one in the 200-yard individual medley. She also was 1986 U.S. Swimmer of the Year and in 1987 was Collegiate Swimmer of the Year. Morales, a two-time Olympian and 1992 gold medalist, captured 11 NCAA individual-event championships and was named 1984 World Swimmer of the Year. Nesty captured five NCAA championships in the butterfly as a swimmer at Florida and Harper, who swam collegiately for Ohio State, won 11 springboard diving championships. William Prew captured national titles in 1941 and 1942 in the 100-yard freestyle and was selected to the 1942 all-America swimming team. Prew has served as vice-president of the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) and ISHOF chairman of the board.
