Leavens, Calandro announce resignations from national office staff

Two veteran NCAA staff members have announced their resignations.

John H. Leavens, NCAA group executive director for membership services, and Daniel A. Calandro, director of Division I Men's Basketball Championship, operations, have chosen to pursue professional opportunities in the Kansas City area.

Leavens joined the staff in September 1982 as a legislative assistant and was promoted to director of legislative services in 1984. In 1985, he assumed the position of director of compliance services.

He was promoted to the position of assistant executive director for compliance services in 1988, and was chosen as group executive director for membership services in 1996.

Before joining the NCAA staff, Leavens served as assistant commissioner for the Mid-American Athletic Conference. He also was a high-school journalism teacher and a newspaper reporter. In addition, Leavens has served as a soccer coach.

He is a graduate of Duke University and owns a master's degree from Ohio State University.


Calandro is responsible for general administration of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship, including the distribution of tickets.

He joined the staff in March 1986 as an enforcement representative. He served in that capacity until 1990, when he was named an assistant director of championships. He was promoted to his current position in 1992.

Calandro previously was a junior college and high-school teacher. He also coached basketball and served as a sales representative. He is a graduate of Knox College.
