Simmons retires as Syracuse lacrosse coach

Roy Simmons Jr., head men's lacrosse coach at Syracuse for 28 years, announced his retirement on May 23. Simmons is the only men's lacrosse coach to capture six Division I national championships.

Simmons compiled a 290-96 record to become the most victorious lacrosse coach in school history. He has led teams to the national semifinals 16 straight years and coached 130 all-Americans, four national players of the year and five lacrosse championship MVPs.

Before assuming the head coaching post, Simmons, who is a 1992 inductee into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame and a member of the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame, spent 12 years as freshman coach and assistant varsity coach under his father, Roy Simmons Sr.

Collegiately, Simmons played three seasons at Syracuse where he earned all-America recognition in 1957 and 1958. He also was team captain in 1958.

Simmons earned a bachelor's degree in sculpture in 1959.

John Desko, 19-year assistant coach at Syracuse, has been selected to succeed Simmons.

Larry Donnithorne selected as president at Colorado Christian. Donnithorne has been president at the College of the Albemarle for the past five years ... Georgetown Executive Vice-President William E. Cooper named president at Richmond, effective July 1 ... Todd Stewart Hutton chosen as president at Utica, effective August 1. Hutton was vice-president for academic administration at Willamette ... Wisconsin-Eau Claire appointed Wayne State President Donald Mash as chancellor.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Eastern College selected Dennis Hunt as athletics director, succeeding Wayne Rasmussen, who resigned after eight years. Rasmussen also served as head soccer coach at the school. Hunt has been head men's basketball coach and a professor in the health science department at Eastern for the past two years ... Vernon Mummert, athletics director at Yavapai College since 1994, accepted the same position at Wabash. Mummert replaces Max Servies, who is retiring as athletics director but will continue as the school's wrestling coach ... Pat Zipfel resigned as director of athletics and head men's basketball coach at Centenary (New Jersey) ... Mark Mullin selected as full-time director of intercollegiate and intramural athletics and recreation at Missouri-Rolla. Mullin has served as head swimming coach since 1985 and campus director of athletics since 1992. Mullin relinquished head swimming coaching responsibilities.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOROF ATHLETICS

Marti Gasser named associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Air Force. Gasser most recently worked as the school's head women's basketball coach before resigning in February.

COACHES

Baseball--San Diego appointed Rich Hill as head coach. Hill, head coach at San Francisco for five years, succeeds John Cunningham, who is retiring after leading the baseball program for 35 years ... Dan O'Brien promoted to head coach at UC San Diego. O'Brien, who was interim coach during the 1998 season, succeeded Robert Fletcher, who resigned ... Hartford selected Harvey Shapiro, head coach at Bowdoin for 15 years, as head coach. Shapiro succeeds interim head coach Bob Nenna ... Central Michigan named Judd Folske head coach. Folske, a volunteer assistant coach during the 1998 season, succeeds Dean Kreiner, who stepped down after compiling a 516-182-4 record in 14 years ... Richard "Moe" Maloney announced plans to retire as head coach at Boston College, effective May 31. Maloney has been head coach since 1988 ... Illinois Central's Kim Johnson appointed head coach at Western Illinois, succeeding Dick Pawlow, who is retiring. Johnson has been head coach at Illinois Central for two seasons and also serves as a scout for Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers.

Baseball assistants--Rich Keirstead resigned as assistant coach at Francis Marion ... Staten Island assistant coach Tony Anarumo resigned.

Men's basketball--Jack Berkshire resigned as head coach at Olgethorpe. Berkshire has been head coach at the school for 22 years. He will retain his responsibilities as athletics director, a position he has held since 1976 ... Colorado Christian chose Bill Perkins as head men's basketball coach to replace Gregg Gierke, who resigned. Last season, Perkins was assistant coach at Southern Illinois ... South Carolina awarded head coach Eddie Folger a five-year contract extension ... Perry Watson, head coach at Detroit, awarded multiyear contract ... Long Island-Brooklyn head coach Ray Haskins resigned ... Fran Fraschilla released as head coach at St. John's (New York).

Men's basketball assistants--Wheeling Jesuit announced the appointment of Michael Cheaney as assistant men's basketball coach. Cheaney most recently coached at DePauw ... Michael Johnson promoted to associate head coach at Cal State Northridge. Johnson, an assistant at the school for six years, is the first to hold this position in the program ... Navy promoted Jimmy Allen to assistant coach, replacing Emmett Davis, who accepted the head coaching post at Colgate. Allen was a restricted coach at the school for two years ... John Burns promoted to full-time assistant coach at Akron, succeeding Brian Donoher, who resigned to take a position in business. Akron also announced the selection of Saint Anthony Crawford IV as part-time assistant coach to replace Burns. Crawford served as an administrative assistant at Western Michigan last season ... Marquette added Rob Jeter as an assistant coach. Jeter worked as an assistant at Wisconsin-Platteville for four seasons ... Detroit promoted David Greer to associate head coach. Greer has been an assistant with the school for three seasons ... Fred Collier promoted to associate head coach at Thiel. Collier has been an assistant coach with the program for two seasons ... Women's basketball--Maria Fantanarosa named head coach at Miami (Ohio) ... Tara Gallagher accepted the position of head coach at Wagner ... Western Carolina announced Jill Dunn as interim head women's coach ... Sue Darling hired as head coach at Air Force. Darling, who replaces Marti Gasser, was an assistant coach with the Seattle Reign of the American Basketball League during the 1996-97 season ... Illinois Wesleyan announced the selection of Mia Smith as head coach, succeeding Mandy Neal, who will remain head softball coach. Smith has been head volleyball and softball coach at Monmouth (Illinois) since 1994 ... Phil Stern, two-year head coach at Dowling, hired as head coach at South Carolina-Aiken. Stern replaces Gail Moody-Johnson, who had been head coach for 12 years.

Women's basketball assistants--Lenoir-Rhyne added Amy Dellinger and Schonna Banner as assistant coaches. Dellinger, the first full-time women's assistant coach in school history, has been head girls' basketball coach at South Caldwell (North Carolina) High School for three seasons. Banner was an assistant coach at South Caldwell (North Carolina) High School and will serve as part-time coach at Lenoir-Rhyne ... Arizona chose Karen Caires as assistant coach and Cody Huffman as director of women's basketball operations.

Football assistants--Sam Houston wide receivers coach Gary Oliver resigned to accept a head coaching position at Bishop Lynch High School. The school also appointed Chris Lancaster offensive coordinator ... Humboldt State named Peter Shinnick offensive line coach, effective August 1. Shinnick most recently fulfilled offensive coordinator duties at St. Cloud State.

Men's and women's golf--Jay Crosier selected as head men's and women's golf coach at Plattsburgh State. Crosier also serves as assistant men's basketball coach and assistant director of the fitness center at the school.

Men's and women's golf assistants--Plattsburgh appointed Phoebe Sturm and Matt Salvatore as assistant coaches. Sturm also is associate athletics director at the school. Salvatore is director of the school's fitness center and will be a volunteer assistant with the program.

Women's ice hockey--Dennis Miller appointed head coach at Vermont. The program was upgraded to varsity status May 1, 1998, and the squad is scheduled to compete in the ECAC Women's Alliance. For the past two years, Miller has been head coach of the women's ice hockey club team at the school.

Men's lacrosse--Dan Sheehan accepted the position of head men's lacrosse coach at Le Moyne ... Jeff Thomsen stepped down as head coach at Vermont to become a part-time physical education teacher at Bosque Preparatory School (New Mexico). Thomsen has been head coach at Vermont since 1988 ... Quinnipiac chose Tim Price as head coach.

Women's lacrosse--Feffie Barnhill, head coach at William and Mary for the past 17 years, resigned. Barnhill, who captured Colonial Athletic Association coach of the year honors last season, closes her tenure with a 159-89-1 career mark.

Men's and women's rowing/crew--Mercyhurst appointed Adrian Spracklen as head coach. Spracklen succeeds Sean Tobin, who resigned.

Women's soccer assistant--Kim Kottmeier resigned as assistant coach at California (Pennsylvania).

Men's and women's swimming--Missouri-Rolla assistant swimming and football coach Doug Grooms named head swimming coach. Grooms has been an assistant with the program since 1992 ... Eric MacDonald resigned as head men's and women's coach after five seasons at Findlay to become program director for the city of Cocoa Beach, Florida. MacDonald was the GLIAC coach of the year for the 1997-98 season ... Franklin and Marshall hired Stephen Fletcher as head men's and women's coach. Fletcher, who replaces L. John Trites, has fulfilled assistant coaching duties at Rider and Rutgers ... Jerry Foley named head coach at Bucknell, succeeding Lynn Kachmarik, who accepted associate athletics director and head women's water polo coaching responsibilites. For the past four years, Foley has been assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Army.

Men's and women's tennis--Pierre Pilote, head men's and women's tennis coach at Stetson, promoted to director of tennis. Pilote has been head men's coach for five years and assumed the head women's coaching post in January, replacing Katherine Price ... North Carolina-Pembroke appointed Sandi Mitchell head coach, replacing Brenda Burgess, who resigned. Mitchell, who was head women's basketball coach at Dana last season, also will assume assistant women's basketball coaching duties to replace Beverly Justice, who was promoted to head women's volleyball coach ... Craig Monson named head women's coach at Wisconsin-Stout. Monson closes a three-year run as head men's tennis coach and one year as women's head coach at Macalester.

Men's and women's volleyball--Duncan McFarland resigned as head men's coach at UC San Diego. McFarland, who will retain his position as head women's volleyball coach, has been coach of both squads for two years ... Findlay announced the resignation of Nicole Mudrak as head coach after two seasons. Mudrak accepted an assistant coaching position at Eastern Michigan ... Doug Tully named head women's coach at Mankato State, replacing Marge Burkett, who resigned. Tully was an assistant coach at Michigan State for four years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants--Georgia Southern added Wendy Schott as an assistant coach for the 1998 season. Most recently, Schott was volunteer assistant coach at Elon ... Ohio announced the hiring of Michael Lessinger as assistant women's coach to replace Kelli Meyers, who assumed the head coaching post at Connecticut. Most recently, Lessinger served as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Texas Tech ... Jun Liu selected as assistant coach at Marquette.

Wrestling--Franklin and Marshall wrestling coach Fran Presley resigned after five years as head coach. Presley closes his tenure with a 28-67-2 record.

STAFF

Assistant athletic trainer--Jon Murray appointed assistant athletic trainer at Texas Tech. Murray was a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the school last season.

Marketing and promotions--Akron announced the hiring of Vincent Maculaitis as director of marketing and promotions for athletics. Maculaitis, who succeeds Joe Dunn, has been assistant general manager for marketing and communications for the Akron Aeros, a class AA affiliate of Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians ... Terry M. Johnson named marketing and promotions director at Morehead State. Johnson was marketing and promotions manager, publishing division, at Host Communications, Inc.

Sports information--Rob Ervin resigned as sports information director at Jacksonville effective immediately. Ervin had held the position since November 1997 ... Miami (Ohio) announced the selection of Mike Wolf as sports information director.

Sports information assistants--Mary Wagner, assistant sports information director at Florida, resigned to accept the position of media relations coordinator for USA Swimming ... Marquette chose Josh Sutter as assistant sports information director. Sutter has worked in the sports information office at Saint Louis for the past two years.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Sheila Benton added as a membership services representative. Benton comes from Florida State, where she most recently was assistant director for compliance.

CONFERENCES

The California Collegiate Athletic Association named Robert Hiegert as the conference's first full-time commissioner, effective July 1. Hiegert, who is a former athletics director and head baseball coach at Cal State Northridge, fulfilled commissioner responsibilities on a part-time basis last year.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference appointed of Rudy Washington commissioner. Washington, who succeeds James Frank, has been executive director for the Black Coaches Association and will assume the position July 1.

Tom Hart, athletics director at Webster, elected as president of the Saint Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Principia senior woman administrator and volleyball coach Lee Suarez was selected as vice-president. Hart succeeds Ira Zeff, athletics director at Blackburn, and Suarez replaces Gerry Albins, senior woman administrator at Blackburn.

ASSOCIATIONS

John Underwood, associate athletics director at Oklahoma from 1987-97, hired to lead the sports marketing department of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau.


NOTABLES

Florida Southern junior golfer Shanna Nagy captured Division II Rolex College Player of the Year honors, presented by Nicklaus Golf Equipment. Nagy, a first team all-America selection, earned individual medalist honors at the NCAA Divisions II and III Women's Golf Championships. Also, Methodist golfers Chad Collins and Tracey Gage selected as Division III Rolex College Players of the Year. Collins, a freshman, won individual medalist honors at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships and also was named national player of the year, national freshman of the year, first-team all-Dixie Intercollegiate Athle-tic Conference and first-team all-America. Gage, who turned in a second-place finish at the NCAA Divisions II and III Women's Golf Championships, is a first-team all-America selection and finished in the top 10 in seven of the 10 tournments in which she competed.

Ginny Martino, first-year head women's lacrosse coach at West Chester, was chosen as Division II national coach of the year. Martino's team became the first Division II team to gain a berth in the National Collegiate Women's Lacrosse Championship, in which one automatic berth is awarded to the top Division II team in the nation. Martino also guided her team to the school's 12th straight Pennsylvania Athletic Conference title.

Nancy Evans and Marissa Catlin garnered Honda Award honors as the top women collegiate athletes in softball and tennis, respectively. Evans, a senior at Arizona, closed the season with a 36-2 record, 0.98 earned-run average and a .366 batting average. She also was a first-team all-American and an all-Pacific-10 Conference selection. Catlin, a sophomore at Georgia, finished the season on a 19-match winning streak and was named the Southeastern Conference player of the year and earned a spot on the athletics director's honor roll.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named the following Division I national award winners: Brian Kalbas, William and Mary, Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year; Lauren Nikolaus, William and Mary, ITA National Senior Player of the Year; Mirela Vladulescu, Alabama-Birmingham, ITA National Rookie of the Year; Marissa Catlin, Georgia, ITA National Player to Watch; Reka Cseresnyes, Arizona State, Cissie Leary/ITA Award for Sportsmanship; Kevin Cory, Mississippi, ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year.


DEATHS

Brianne Mae Morgan, sophomore softball player at Robert Morris, died May 14, at the age of 20. Morgan, who went into cardiac arrest and collapsed while jogging, was a two-time all-Northeast Conference pick at third base and also netted Northeast Region all-America honors in 1997. She also led the team with 26 runs scored and a .326 batting average en route to the school's second straight conference championship.

Helena Mroczkowska Dow, former fencing coach at Fairleigh Dickinson, died April 22. She was 80. Dow fenced collegiately at Hofstra. She was the Intercolleigate Women's Fencing Association foil champion in 1939 and captured the first of four Amateur Fencers League of America titles in 1940. Dow went on to compete in the 1948 Olympics before moving on to serve as head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson from 1967-69. Dow was elected into the fencing section of the Helms Hall of Fame in 1980.

J. W. "Wobble" Davidson, three-sport letterman and longtime assistant football coach at Mississippi, died May 25. He was 79. Davidson lettered four times in football, three times in track and two times in basketball during his collegiate years at Mississippi. Throughout more than four decades, Davidson fulfilled a variety of positions at the school, including serving as an assistant football coach under three head coaches and helping to guide the football team to 16 bowl game appearances and six Southeastern Conference championships.
