Skiing all-academic team selected
A total of 119 student-athletes from 22 schools were named to the 1998 United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA) All-Academic team.
To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have competed in his or her respective regional championship and had a fall semester/quarter grade-point average of 3.500 or higher (4.000 scale).
"We are delighted to have such a large percentage of our student-athletes achieve this honor," said Kelly J. Higgins, chair of the NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee and former chair of the USCSCA and director of athletics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
"To have one-third of the competing athletes at regional championships on this team says a lot for the sport of skiing, their success in the classroom and the NCAA programs."
The University of Denver and the University of New Mexico placed 12 student-athletes each on the team. The University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Utah had nine each.
The team includes two 1998 individual-event champions, Thorodd Bakken of the University of Vermont and Christian Hutter of Denver. Former individual-event champions Doris Hausleitner of Alaska Anchorage and Roberta Pergher of Denver also made the team.
