Five exempted contests approved for certification
The Exempted Contests Subcommittee of the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet has forwarded five additional exempted contests to the cabinet for certification.
The five events were recommended for certification at the subcommittee's April 28-29 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri.
The events, all of which are men's basketball events, are the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic (November 10-11, 1998, New York); the Top of the World Classic (November 19-22, 1998, Fairbanks, Alaska); the Maui Invitational (November 23-24, 1998, Maui, Hawaii); the Chase Preseason National Invitation Tournament (November 25 and 27, 1998, New York); and the Postseason Nation Invitation Tournament (March 10-19 and 23-25, 1999, New York).
The first four events listed are one-in-four exemptions, while the postseason NIT is an annual exemption. The Championships/Competition Cabinet will consider all five events for certification at its July meeting.
The subcommittee also looked with favor on a number of events, including 13 in men's basketball and seven in women's basketball, but withheld recommendation for certification pending additional information to be reviewed at a future meeting.
The subcommittee denied certification to the following events: the London Classic (men's basketball, November 24-27, 1998, London, England); the Northeast Postseason Invitational (men's basketball, March 8, 9 and 15, 1999, campus sites); the European Collegiate Classic (men's basketball, November 1999, Rome, Italy); the Unity Classic Invitational (women's basketball, November 19-21, 1998, Providence, Rhode Island); the Special Olympics (women's basketball, November 1998, Norfolk, Virginia); the Women's Postseason National Invitation Tournament (women's basketball, March 10-23, 1999, campus sites); the San Juan Shootout (men's and women's basketball, November 27-29, 1998, San Juan, Puerto Rico); and the IPFW Soccer Showcase (men's and women's soccer, August 1999, Fort Wayne, Indiana).
In other actions, the subcommittee reviewed a draft of proposed legislation that would permit institutions to play a 28th basketball game and to limit each institution to one exempted game or tournament. It was the sense of the subcommittee that the proposal should not permit an institution to play in Hawaii more than once in four years and that the same provision should apply to Alaska and Puerto Rico.
The subcommittee agreed to review the proposal further in a future meeting and to forward the proposal to the Championships/Competition Cabinet for action.
