Moccasins regain II men's golf throne with ninth team title
Florida Southern won the Division II Men's Golf Championships team title after a one-year hiatus.
The Moccasins captured their Division II-leading ninth men's golf title overall and their third in the last four years at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort May 19-22 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
Defending champion Columbus State finished second after Florida Southern posted top team scores in the second, third and fourth rounds of play.
The Moccasins notched a four-round total of 1,168 to take the crown. Florida Southern earned the win behind the efforts of Travis Perkins and Matt Saglio, who tied for fifth in the individual scoring.
Perkins bettered his total as the tournament progressed, posting a first-round 79, then 75, 70 and 69 in the final three rounds. Saglio was more consistent, shooting rounds of 73, 70, 76 and 74.
Teammate Wayne Raath's total of 294 featured a second-round 69 and earned him a ninth-place tie. Other Florida Southern contributors included Jeff Klauk, who posted a four-round total of 296, and Andy McLendon, who finished at 300.
Columbus State's Jaco Rall placed third for the second straight year with rounds of 75, 71, 69 and 76.
Orjan Larsen of West Florida won medalist honors with a total that included a second-round 69 and a final-round 66. Larsen's 280 score was eight under par and eight shots ahead of runner-up Lee Kinney of Cal State San Bernardino.
