Wrestling all-academic teams and individuals announced
More than 200 student-athletes were recognized on the respective division National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) all-academic teams for the past year.
Princeton University repeated as the Division I academic champion with a grade-point average of 3.423. The team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative GPA of 10 wrestlers from each team. Eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team's qualifying tournament.
Among the Division I honorees were three national champions, Tim Hartung of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; Jeff McGinness of team champion University of Iowa; and Stephen Neal of California State University, Bakersfield.
To be eligible, a varsity student-athlete must have a 3.000 grade-point average or better (based on a 4.000 scale) and meet one of the following athletics criteria: (1) win at least 60 percent of his matches; (2) place in the top four at the respective conference meet; (3) qualify for the NCAA championships.
In Division II, Colorado School of Mines won the team academic title for the third time in the award's five-year existence.
The Division II team included champions Jody Strittmatter of the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown, and John Simpson of Colorado Mines. George Thompson of North Dakota State University and Mike Shadwinkel of Adams State College made the team for the fourth time.
To be nominated for the Division II team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.000 GPA (on a scale of 4.000). He also must be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member of his team, demonstrate a high degree of skill, and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.
Wabash College won the inaugural team academic award for Division III. The individual honorees included national champions Henry Gerten and Jim Peterson of team champion Augsburg College, plus John Gemmell of Ithaca College.
To make the Division III squad, student-athletes needed a 3.200 GPA (based on a 4.000 scale) or better over the two previous semesters. Consideration also was given to those who did not meet that criterion, but had a 3.200 or better overall GPA. Athletically, wrestlers must have placed at least fourth in their conference qualifier or sixth in their regional qualifier, wrestled in at least half of their scheduled competitions and have a minimum winning percentage of .500. Wrestlers who have won at least two-thirds of their matches and competed in two-thirds of their team's schedule competitions the previous year also are eligible.
